Anything below 15W is too thin - this is an ancient engine design. My preference is Motul or Silkolene 15W50.

Mobil1 ok for the lt77 gearbox but too thin for the engine.

I use Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 as I fell for the

"oil contains intelligent molecules that cling to your engine and form an extra layer that protects from start up"

pitch seeing as our V8s are so susceptible to cam wear at start up

20/50 is definitely the way to go. It's an old engine designed before the nano-clearances of modern engines which allows them to run on thin oil. If this modern thin stuff is used oil pressure will fall and engine wear will be significantly accelerated.

Valvoline VR1 20/50 all the waysmile

On this side of the pond, the Government instructed oil producers to reduce the amount of zinc and phosphorous in the oil, as they reduce the life of catalytic converters. Older "flat tappet" engines like ours need the extra lubrication.

I use a special oil made by the Joe Gibbs race people (HASCAR, Hot Rods, Drag Racing. etc.) This has the zinc in it. Many people however prefer Shell Rotella oil, which is commonly used on diesel engines. Some synthetics are good for this.

Much of this information has come to me from an engine builder, and it applies to boats (which don't have cats.) I recommend wedge owners to do some research and discuss this with anyone they trust to work on their engines.

Hi Wilf,

over here we have very little information about this. I looked into is 6 months ago but the oil manufacturers keep zinc and phosphorous percentage content very close to their chests.

All the brands are different too so unfortunately there is very little to learn from the US discussion groups that we can use over here, except for the odd case where someone imports a US brand.

20w50 with zinc/phosphorous additives (I use VR1)

For the enthusiasts, perhaps 20w60 for summer use?
