Dash Cam's

Evening all,

Hope we're all well.

Just wondering if anyone has fitted a dash cam to their car and if so which one?

The amount of stories I am hearing these days of people "crashing into people to claim on their insurance" is scaring me deeply.

Looking to fit something into the car so that it start's filming automatically.

I've been thinking about this myself and have had a look around at them. The blackvue hd looks like the way to go. They seem to be approved by some insurance companies and start from around £200.

I have one in the lorry and has helped me with near misses and things my boss won't believe

I have ordered the same one for in my cars as I've nearly had a head on which was caused by a Whitman in a seat arosa pulling out to overtake whilst sitting too close and shoved the oncoming car at point blanck to swerve and bounce into my lane. I was in a jeep Cherokee at the time so u thew it up the bank to avoid. The seat drove on without a care in the world

Got a Roadhawk DC-1 in the car. Had it since the start of the year. Fit and forget, checked it the other day and it's still working on the same sd card. Good clear pictures, sound and has the Gps tracking.

I bought a DR32 after following that thread for a while. Was £66 exc micro SD card but I believe the price pushed up to £90 (ironically, probably as a result of all the good reviews people were giving it on that thread.

It doesn't have GPS tracking, doesn't have speed showing but it records in 5 min segments, takes a 32GB micro Sd (Class 10 preferably)and it just records over once the card is full.

It has a G sensor so if it experiences sudden movements (slamming on the brakes is enough) it will then make that a protected file so that it can't be overwritten until you manually change the status of the file. It also has the option of manually saving a recording simply by pressing a button (I have used this a couple of times recently when I have seen a car suitable for the "Spotted" thread.

I am just back from holiday and I took this with me and fitted to the hire car so I have a whole load of saved files that will go along with the holiday memories like driving through Sedona, over the Hoover Dam, down Vegas boulevard etc.

There is a guy on youtube who tests a lot of these cameras, Techmoan or something similar and they are very useful.

It very much fits into the get what you pay for category although there are differing opinions on the need for GPS / speed etc.

I bought a £4 phone mount from eBay and use the free AutoGuard Blackbox software via the Google Play Store.

1080p video, impact detection, numerous options for recording lengths, video compression, etc. and it works in the background so you can use the phone as normal (i.e. satnav/spotify/phone) while it's recording.

EDIT: my phone (Sony Xperia S) allows you to set options upon various situations. It knows when I plug it into the phone mount and starts AutoGuard automagically.

I used a similar set up to start with but unless I had it in flight mode, any incoming text or phone call or email alert basically froze the filming!
