A good 996 turbo?

Hi everyone
New to the Porsche scene, and have been debating between a 996 turbo and a 997 c2.
Have decided the turbo is the way to go, but I am open to opinions on that?
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good one?
I'm based in Northern Ireland, and have no issues travelling, but there are only two for sale in the country and both seem about 5k price heavy.

had the same conversation with myself a few months ago.
given the potential issue with the gen 1 997 engine and the lure of the Turbo box that needs ticking; i went for the 996T.
i'd already done a NA 911 so maybe had a different perspective to you, but they look to be bottoming in terms of prices and are incredibly fast and great fun (but then so is a 997 in any other frame of reference).
best try and get a test drive sorted, although apreciate that might be a bit tricky with just 2 to choose from.
as for buying, look at the many highly regarded brand specialist; 911Virgin,Northway, RSJ, JZM etc. i found them all very helpful and went for one from 911Virgin. you're better off going for a slightly more expensive one with good provenance though as they can all be bloody expensive when they go wrong.

I also made the same decision to go for the turbo. My advice is not unique,some minor service items can really add up the costs (eg heatshields,rusting bolts,actuators,tyres etc,etc), the car has to be carefully checked over/inspected.
In my experience the competition amongst the specialist traders is hot for the really good cars, the second tier of specialists find it difficult to get to these cars and in some cases are buying from other traders unseen, compared to the likes of JZM,911V,RSJ etc that vet the cars before taking them on. I had several issues, none major but cumulatively very expensive that I picked up after I'd bought mine depsite it supposedley being inspected, the dealer picked up all the costs of these items but I could have easily missed them and not known until it had its first service, which could have been nearly two years later!

Gd decision going for the Turbo. I'm a fellow Nordy like yourself. I've had mine for near 4yrs now & had thought of selling it but prob going to get a power upgrade instead.
My only regret is not getting an X50 or an S. I got lucky & got an N.I based car with a warranty. If your looking advice contact George McMillan in Ballyclare & he also does inspections. Serious Porsche guru & top bloke too.

Go and have a look/drive of the Polar Silver 996 turbo at hollybrook. It is a nice example owned by a Porsche Club member.
As 74driver said, George McMillan is the man. Alan McGookin is also excellent. Both these porsche specialists are based in Ballyclare.
I think 25-30k should get you into a good car.

If I were looking again (which I'm not as I've just bought one 
then I'd look at the cobalt manual at rpm or a lapis w plate on 63k at aporscha in Witney (23.5k). I've seen the last one and its very shiny!
I discounted a 997 as I couldn't stretch to the gen 2 post 09 cars to avoid the IMS issue.
I imagine of of those as a NA car would be more than enough as a daily. Mine has a JZM remap to 490 and is just silly quick. Good fun though!

I really wanted a manual, but the best one I can find is silver, and I have had that many silver cars I find them bland now.
Looking at a very nice tip in a colour I think is very very good on the car

It's all about condition including what owners have spent on maintaining the cars including service intervals, which on the newer cars are every two years. I have had mine a year this week and for one reason or another didn't use it much last year as its a second car. Even still it is currently having an oil change service, the geo checked etc. so I know all is well plus if I ever sell it (which would be either for a pre '73 car or 997GT3 or GT3 RS) the new owner can sleep safely that a big bill should not be around the corner
