Track Day Noise GT3 - is this a solution ?

Saw this photo of Cup Cars on the grid, notice how the pipes are angled downwards, is this to help lower noise and would it work on a road going GT3/RS ?

the better and much much easier to do this is via a 6mm ID vacuum end cap to plug up the exhaust flap control solenoid found at the right side of the engine. i'll find out how much quieter this is next week when i am measured

They work to get you past track side sound monitoring stations by directing the sound away from the booth (more commonly) or downwards (to try and generally diffuse). Can be enough to gain you a few extra db though for those tracks when you are close ish and so in this type of situation can be effective. I've used them on a few tracks.
Won't help on static testing though and this seems to be the most common way track days are tested right?. The 911 suffers massively in these tests because everything is situated back there and adds to the noise when testing in this way. Sadly explaining this and asking for trackside tests fall on deaf ears.

997.1 GT3RS - Tested at Brands ambient temp , 18k miles on std car. 102db. Vacuum cap added and 2db quieter immediately. Re tested with air con off and clutch pedal held in and resulted in 99db. Took the car to thoroughly warm up the exhaust and crept in at 98db and was allowed to participate. Took the vacuum cap off and had no issues for the day with the sport button on aswell.

magic... i have a 7.2RS but should similarly benefit... it was tested at 103db before held at 6000rpm with AC off and clutch in.

it looks like this mod is worth 4 dB which is right on the money.. well done.... another reason why GT3s are the best track cars... you can even silence it easily...


Defo handy to know you won't get blackflagged with sport button on. I have been leaving it off.

I've got a Mallory park TD for this sat, but it has a 95dB static limit. Does anyone have an idea if the vacuum cap mod will bring a 997.1 GT3 to within this limit?

You`ll be lucky if they police it properly ! We were only scraping in at 98db`s

The only way to get through would be to lie about where your car red lines and hence you will be asked to rev it lower than normal for the test. Although they have probably seen that one a million times before !!!

95dB is punchy. I think you will fail unless the test was conducted at 5000rpm and even then....

I'll post back on Sat after i've not got through the noise test.

I downloaded an iphone dB app and will take some measurements this evening.

People have said aircon off, clutch in and vacuum cap on - let's see what it measures.

Note to self, check noise limits first before booking!
