The engine & gearbox are out of my E-Type and as guessed, the flywheel is lightened, clutch cover is standard, clutch plate is a paddle variety and the release bearing was totally broken up.

I guess the question would be - replace the clutch with a standard item (as the car isn't used for heavy racing anymore) or replace on a like for like basis?

Put the standard one back in, make it a proper E Type once again...

How tweaked is the engine? if a standard clutch will take the power I'd expect it to be nicer drive.

But I know very little.

Getting O/T, is the reason for a paddle clutch only having 4 pads rather than a full ring of friction material so that the pressure is greater on the friction area so can transmit more power?

That bit seems logical, but then why does a standard clutch have the full ring, is the take up smoother on a full ring than 4 blocks?

I think the reason is that they have a much higher friction level so you can use smaller pads of material and thus get better cooling of the material and flywheel face and improved torque handling at the same time.

Not a mod I would do on an E Type unless it was being used in a race series. Paddle clutches are a necessary evil on the track but quite unpleasant on the road. They are really in or out and not much between. E Type to me is a cruiser and should be a pleasure to drive.

Exactly. Yes, the clutch certainly was "in" or "out". My E-Type was used in racing series across many years in the nineties. 48 race starts IIRC

I've decided to opt for a standard clutch yo make the car more driveable. Once complete, she'll be sent down to Sigma Engineering for a rolling road session

Just for comparison:

New clutch bearing vs old :-)
