Struggling to see the Autosport logic urging Red Bull to promote Ricciardo instead of signing Raikkonen unless they are already in the know that perhaps Kimi has resigned for Renault Lotus or they know Daniel has got the nod.

STR is the development area for Red Bull drivers. The idea is that they work through the ranks with Red Bull Racing through the junior formulas and then to STR where they learn F1.

If the top team don't bother to pick a driver who has served his apprenticeship with their academy and just signs A.N.Other driver whats the point in their training/academy ?

I haven't read their article but reasons including: not having two roosters in one coop and giving their young driver programme some sort of credibility will be making them look very closely at Ricciardo.

A shame as because of this we most certainly won't see the Iceman vs the finger

All this is as maybe but Mark Webber got the Red Bull seat in preference to the Red Bull juniors of the time so there is precedence for hiring the best 'as they see it' for the job at the time.....

Arr yes, another day, another Red Bull seat thread!

If I was in the top-job at Red Bull, i'd be making the decision purely based upon;
  • Ability to collect points
  • How much money in/out
  • Car-development skills
Which would put Raikkonen ahead on paper assuming he isn't asking for the moon on a stick. A lolly on a stick should be fine.

...I still believe Ricciardo will get the nod though!

Have any drivers from the Red Bull junior team, apart from Vettel gone further into F1?

Vettel is the only one to be promoted to the top in Red Bull's nine seasons in F1.

Liuzzi went on to have an extended career in F1

Can't really see KR wanting a number 2 role with Vettels (and Redbull's) recent record, and can't really see VEttel wanting 'equal' treatment for both drivers.

I really hope Kimi stays at Lotus and they can improve a little more.

Give Ricciardo a chance - or even get back Alguersuari.

if I was KR, I wouldn't want to be going to RedBull anyway.

I don't think having two world-champ level drivers in a team ever works out nice.

As a spectator I'd like to see both of them at RBR, but the pragmatist in me thinks it would be a bad idea.

The best case scenario is that Vettel would become disenchanted with the team because of more attention being paid to KR (more than Webber got at any rate), the worst case is that it could ruin the team from the inside because neither driver would give any quarter on the circuit. KR would never play second fiddle to Vettel, and Vettel would throw his toys out of the pram if he thought RBR was giving KR more attention (Mark's wing change springs to mind).

I tend to think Vettel probably likes the current situation at RBR, and would definitely have a strong preference for Ricciardo because he would be an out-and-out number 2 driver.

RBR also have a fair degree of pressure to show that their young driver programme works, with only Vettel having graduated in 9 years.

Potential for an interesting play on words there; resigned vs re-signed smile

It looks like Dan is trying a bit too hard!.

(Photo from the Autosport forum).

Personally I'd like to see Dan in the car alongside Vettel.

It's great for the constructors championship.

Poorer for the drivers championship, as they take points off each other.

If your team goal is WCC first, go for 2 top drivers.

If your team goal is WDC first, have the fastest driver and a number 2 that can consistently act as rear gunner, to pick up the P1 when the chosen one has an off weekend or mechanical failure.

Red Bull need to look at the Long Term.

If Vettel is poached by Ferrari or Mercedes in 2016, they need a succession plan. I'd be inclined to think Ricciardo may have more potential than Kimi by the time 2016 arrives....

Kimi and Seb in the same team is only going to devalue one of them, unless they have a 50/50 split of results. Webber was the ideal team mate in terms of pace to Seb, even though he'd never admit it. If Webber had performed at his undoubted pace over a full season then his partnership with Seb would have been even more acrimonious, and Alonso may have been 2011 and 2013 champion too.

If in year one, Ricciardo gets a similar points haul to Webber (a regular 4th/5th in the championship with a couple of wins) I do not think it will damage his career, as long as he improves on that in 2015 to be constant thorn in Seb's side. I think he can be....and if he fails, I'm sure Red Bull will be able to choose from da Costa, Vergne, Hamilton, Rosberg or anyone else by 2016.

So I'd go for Ricciardo as the sensible solution.

This though is partly as Helmet does his very best to burn them as soon as they are dropped from the programme.

If you never go off you are not close enough to the limit. That is not to say that drivers should be free to crash but a trip through the kitty litter on Friday is no great shakes, although best not to touch anything firm.

It's keeping it on the black stuff on Saturdays and Sundays that really matters.

If they do not sign Kimi why bother with Ricciardo when Carlos Sainz jnr does 9 laps less in the Torro Rosso and is less than 0.044 seconds slower (less than 1/10th amazing).

Ricciardo has done thousands of miles in that Torro Rosso and Sainz jnr is that close. Excellent performance from Sainz jnr as he has not the same experience in an F1 car as Ricciardo but you have to ask how good or bad is Ricciardo. INMHO Ricciardo is not startling enough I can see him winning the odd race in a Red Bull but never challenging for the championship or is that what Seb, Marko and Red Bull want.

I know they will trot out all the usual that Ricciardo was on differnt tyres or fuel loads or was going for a longer run or whatever but none the same the gap to Sainz jnr is not good for his ego and then only 3rd quickest in the Red Bull. I can not see that as a good days work but what do I know not much.

maybe we'll see Sainz Jr in a Toro Rosso soon. He may have raw pace but at 18 they'll want him to mature and gain experience before jumping in f1 at the deep end

just guessing, but i think we'll see Ricciardo move up to RBR, Da Costa partnering Vergne next season, and if Vergne is soundly beaten by the new guy, maybe Sainz Jr will step up to Toro Rosso.
