Was the e60 m5 supposed to have a break in service the same as the new one? Went to trade my e60 in and they want to knock me down because the first owner didn't have it done?

Yeah, I think all M cars have to have a running in service at around 1200 miles. I had my M3 done recently. They change the oil and some other bits.

Did it make a big difference to the value of the trade in? It's come up in topics here before. Some people feel pretty strongly about it, i.e. wouldn't buy a car that missed it. I guess in your case nothing has gone disastrously wrong with the car...

Thanks. It is an 06 m5 and now has 50000 miles on it. I knew it was something had to be done on newer m cars wasn't sure about the e60. Obviously didn't do my research very well.

You'll get bent over a barrel not having the running in service completed.

Might be worthwhile contacting BMW UK to check whether it has/hasn't been carried out and the service book wasn't stamped at the time

Didnt you check the service records when you bought the car?

I don't think they can sell a car as Approved Used unless it has a full history. It's definitely worth checking in case they did forget to stamp the book, as the poster above said. I have had that happen before.

Yup they forgot

Apparently should be done at 1200 miles was done at 1500 so shouldn't be a issue I would think

IIRC you get 700 miles grace from the 1200 mile point, even so, many moons ago I remember looking at a CSL with a main dealer that had the 1200 mile service done at 2800 miles, their opinion at the time was that it didn't matter in regards to the AUC warranty as BMW would stand by the sale through a main dealer.

2800 miles and they said it was ok? Interesting, I don't know if a couple of years down the line prospective buyers might be put off.

With how the newer cars warn you when you're due a service, it would be hard to drag it out that long. They drive you mental with alerts. Not my favourite feature on the car...

It put me off, which is why I didn't buy it. It also had AP brakes all around and I think a Supersprint exhaust system, again, at the time they said the third party mods wouldn't be an issue for the warranty either.

Just about to pick up my new M5 next week and having had 2 previously was always told how critical the 1200 mile service is/was. It isn't just an oil change, they unlock the power control codes to give you the full power and torque. Not sure why that would reduce value though! Should increase it if you never had the full bhp.

First service is a diff oil change. The oil in the diff housing from new is a run-in oil. They change it for regular stuff as well as rinsing it through to remove any swarf. Then the car also gets an engine oil check / service as well as software updates. The power codes bit doesnt happen. The car has the full BHP tally from day one, you just shouldnt use it all.

Is it a free service? At that sort of interval I think it should be.

The f10 run-in is supposed to involve enabling launch control and some have claimed that the car only runs at about 75% power during break-in, but, having sticked to the run-in procedures I wouldn't know for sure. e60 was just engine oil & diff.
