No but I'm sure that he said that it was the highest road in Europe which as far as I know it is the Col De Bonette! (In FRANCE)

Despite being for a slightly tenuous reason

Nearly. The Col de la Bonnette isn't the highest paved road in Europe (the extra bit of the Bonnette added to the original col, is the Cime de la Bonnette and not technically part of the the col (you can miss it out) meaning the L'Iseran is actually the higher col).

The col or rather the Cime de la Bonnette loop, is still less high than multiple roads including ones in Austria - there are some missing from this wiki link...

The road in Spain is I think the A395 up to the barrier - the Pico de Veleta.

Correct.

O/P If you put the following into Google Maps, you can 'Street View' the barrier across the road.

37° 5'37.28"N 3°23'4.04"W

The disused (unused) airport is further north at Ciudad Real.

38° 51′ 23″ N 3° 58′ 12″ W
