If a brand new AM (or any other car) hadn't been run-in properly ie. if the driver used the entire rev range from delivery and gave it lots of welly before the engine got warm, when will you notice the affects of such abuse - would this be in the early part of the engine's life or the latter part?

People often comment that cars that have been 'thrashed' drive well at first. I think things start to get rattley later on...

Ok to use full revs from new, the cars are hot run-in, bet revving hard when cold is bad behaviour...

This ^

It is likely that parts of the valvetrain could fail, like valve springs if, thrashed when cold. As for not following the running in guidelines, it is hard to tell.

No issue with mine being driven "normally" from new
Used a bit of oil to start with but has now settled down to virtually nothing

Any engine thrashed from cold, whether new or old, will potentially suffer. New engines made with modern manufacturing techniques do not mind being used throughout the rev range from new (if warmed properly), but for 1000 miles I would keep the load relatively low - so no high torque demands in a high gear, or consider voluntarily limiting throttle opening to say 60% to encourage selection of an appropriate gear.Remanufactured engines ought to be given a chance by old fashioned running-in techniques.

When I did the PDC at Millbrook a couple of years ago it was in a brand-new car that had been driven off the production line the previous afternoon. It did get a fair spanking!

Yes, but if it was warmed up properly, it should cause no harmsmile

The one thing that makes me cringe, is hearing a cold started engine being revved hardfrown
