London to Wales- nice driving route avoiding m4

Gents,

A few of us are driving to Wales from London and want to avoid the m4 to take in some nice driving roads.

A quick look at a map tells me that the a40 gets most of the way there.

Any other options?

The A40 is a much more pleasant route than the M4 (and you avoid the severn toll...) although at times has a bit of traffic around glos/cheltenham and it's not always easy to find a passing place. Take the A40 all the way to ross on wye then turn up the A49 and then take the B4521 to abergavenny.
