Explosion .......... of Diet Coke

returned home to find the fridge door open and coke splashed all over the kitchen

turns out the a diet coke bottle had exploded breaking the glass shelf and forcing the door open

any ideas why this could have happened? there was still one one bottle of coke that was OK



the bottom was distorted


the top was blow right off


no cold coke .............. I'll just have to have a beer

Bloody hell.. its take a good amount of force to break a bottle like that never mind the glass plate...

I thought the same .... the other bottle was not frozen ... but might have been,
no idea how long the door had been open so lots of food also wasted,
as it was now warn and the glass was also spread around inside.

Happened to me once, the thermostat in the fridge was knackered and froze two big bottles of coke. Woke up in the middle of the night to a huge bang, the force of it had blown the fridge door off its hinges!

Was it on the bottom shelf? Probably did freeze as this heat tricks fridges to run for longer/cooler.

It froze then, solution is to actually set the fridge slightly cooler strange as it sounds!

No. The liquid freezes. The pressurised gas in the bottle doesn't, and as the frozen liquid expands the gas gets compressed further. That could cause enough pressure to make the bottle pop I guess.

High carbonation levels then with the high temps and a dramatic temperature change BOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!

We call it fobbing when filling in high temperatures, Coke will chill the product when bottling so they can control the carbonation levels and they do carbonate at high levels although they have a thicker bottle and cap to cope with the extra pressure (sorry i'm getting all technical).

Presumed it was Coke Cola, was it?

Thinking back i have seen this before when there has been a weak point on the bottle i.e. a slick nick or the bottle has been blown out of spec!

I guess you should send the info with pictures to there customer service department! including any info from the date code on the bottle if you can still read it!!!

I used to work at a supermarket. One day whilst serving at the tills one of the custoemrs waiting in line had her Pepsi bottle explode on her - it went all over ehr clothes and we had to pay for it.

So it also happens outside of the fridge.

Has happened to me before too. In glass bottle Coke too!

Always make sure that nothing is touching the rear wall of the fridge. There's usually a lip on the shelf to stop it, but things can easily be pushed further back if they are on top of other items.
