The heat has been a bit much for the old girl recently & the trip to Goodwood was causing high temps. I stopped on the A34 & removed the front plate, half expecting no change but the temp dropped 15 degrees & still refused to go all the way to the red when stuck in traffic. I have been reluctant to put it back since, it`s up on the dash at the mo. I have been considering a bonnet mounted transfer or even a spray mask for the grille. Would these look rubbish ??

Cheers ...........Andy

Sorry if it's an obvious question, but are your fans cutting in properly?

Yes, no problem, they just don`t seem to draw in enough air with the plate in place, it`s quite happy without it.

Since my last MOT I have been running without the front plate. I keep it in the boot, driven past plenty of Police with no trouble.

Personally I wouldn't want a sticker on my bonnet, I did also consider the half sized plates you can buy, but I just love 'plateless' look smile

Get e cooling system checked.

I ran a full size plate on my Chimaera at all times. Even in 40C heat in the south of Spain with one fan working it didn't overheat.

I stuck a small motorbike plate on the front of mine and keep the old one in the boot with the screws, it will screw down over the top as the holes are wider than the small plate. Police haven't looked twice at it, and I'm in an area well known for them pulling cars for the tiniest thing.

Saw some full size shatterproof ones the other day, so you could fix it underneath without worrying about it exploding on the first speed bump.

I`ve considered the smaller plate too, as for the cooling system, who knows?, the rad is quite new.

Wish I had thought of this.....before I got caught by a front facing camera doing 38 in a 30.....

I take mine off for track days (Phazed's advice), and did notice on Thursday evening that the car never once got remotely hot. And yes, I WAS trying!! I actually drove straight off the circuit at the end and forgot to put it back on, so drove home without it. I was watching the gauges on the way home, as I had an alternator issue, and it was far cooler than recently, staying at or near 70 all the way home.

So I will keep the plate in the boot for the rest of the summer and see what happens. For the good of the car.

+1 - Been running with no front plate for three years and have not only driven past plenty of police without being pulled for no plate but when pulled for speeding and also for not wearing a seatbelt it wasn't mentioned either.

As far as I'm aware is a simple non-endorsable fixed penalty offence anyway.

I do sometimes think that no plate at all makes mine look a bit "unloved" but I prefer it to having the full plate - maybe I'll try to find a small one and meet in the middle. biggrin

An unfortunate side effect of the need to preserve one's coolant temperatures is of course that one becomes less vulnerable to front facing cameras ... what a shame. biggrin

Can you not mount a plate low enough to allow decent air flow, or does this then get troubled by speed bumps etc. I think I'd get sick of people telling me my number plate had fallen off! smile

I got pulled with the likkle plate, it failed to be recognised by the plate camera!

The 2 plod laughed and I received a letter from DVLA, as it was a private plate I had to confirm that I wouldn't be a naughty boy again.

I've only ever been done for no front plate (x3) and a tinted rear plate (x2), only with my old 5 series though.

The few fines on the front plate probably saved me 10x the cost in speeding fines though as we mainly have forward facing cameras around here.
