Next month I am driving across northern France, via Switzerland and then down to southern France ending up in Santander. Previously I have taken out AA European breakdown cover, but the premium is coming out very expensive compared to Green Flag. Does anyone have any suggestions or recent experience regarding European breakdown cover.

Thanks.

When I did it I used manning my insurance to sort it. Came to 70 ish for a year, including recovery of me and car home. If I remember right *AA wanted 160ish just for the 2 weeks!

I am also looking for new UK policy and just found autoaid, which seems very good. 39 for full UK.

ADAC

They cover you not the car, whether its yours, you,re a passenger or even hire car. Everywhere in Europe and all countries bordering it (Egypt, Morroco etc). They are the only people who will cover my TVR regardless of how much I would pay. When you call them in UK AA turn up. How much? About £70 and I think that includes other half from memory. You have to call them in Germany but they speak perfectly good English and call you back.

Adrian Flux Rescue.

You do not have to be a policy holder and the amount of arsing around they will do to make sure you and the car end up where you want is impressive. Even if these are different places.

Worth a look, cheap enough at sub £70.

Loads of very good stuff on ADAC in these forums.

I'm not certain, but I think they are still "a driver's organisation" rather than an arm of an insurance conglomerate. Bit like a friendly society versus a bank??

It's where I will go for breakdown cover on my Tuscan next year when Green Flag impose their 10 year limit.

I have also used ADAC this year. As already said they cover the driver and will cover any age of car. Very efficient service from Germany. When you call they will phone you back to save your phone bill and are very courteous. Cost is about £70 for an annual policy.

I have just taken out break down cover with ADAC. It was highly recommended by lots of people.
If you don't want to call the German number you can simply email Petra and she will send you a form back via email which you can fill in on the computer and email back to her.

Thanks for all your replies. I went with Flux in the end. My concern with the German cover would be if there was a dispute with the cover paying out for reason. Insurance contracts can be a bit technical and if you ever needed to sue then you don't want to have any jurisdictional issues. That would be my only advice to those who decided to go with ADAC. ADAC is not insurance cover it is Breakdown cover for the Whole of Europe and beyond for a whole year as stated and also includes medical benefits, hire car if your car has to be recovered etc. Better value than an insurance policy in my opinion but you pays yer money ...........

I have just used IMA/Britannia Rescue which was FREE as part of my Nationwide Flex+ account.

Covers the person - I had a low loader to a local garage, plus repatriated my car from the Alps (over 1000m), free taxis/hire car and will fly you home or contribute to fuel cost.

Very impressed with the level of service throughout.

I'm afraid it is insurance cover. What is it if not cover for events which might happen (i.e. breaking down)?!! I was just offering some advice that should there be an issue with paying out. If it is not insurance then why is it underwritten by a German insurer called ADAC Insurance? German Insurance contracts work in a very different way to insurance contracts underwritten in the UK. I was just offering some free legal advice just in case the worst happened.

Just to add a recent experience of ADAC for those interested.

I recently went on a trip to the nurburgring with a few other cars, on the way back on of the cars broke down (diff failure), he had ADAC cover so rang them up to get recovered. They took his car to a pound in Germany where they explained his car would be delivered back to the UK (at no cost) but it would take a couple of weeks as they had to wait for a transported load to go at once. They offered him a courtesy car for him to drive back to the UK but this would cost an additional 300 Euros (fair enough), however he declined as I was able to give him a lift home.

I'm impressed that they will be sending the car back to the UK at no extra cost considering the car has virtually no value (in the eyes of breakdown/insurance companies)!

All in all I am reassured by his experience that I made the right decision taking out ADAC cover, luckily I haven't had to use it yet smile
