Back in the fold with a 1988 3.2 Carrera Sport
Discussion
After owning a 996 and 997.1 GT3 in the past, it's time to experience the impact bumper era
After lots of research, initial view was I needed a 930, howeber after visiting some cars I soon realised :-
- being 25+ years old , you can't expect today's performance / handling, so a 930 was probably OTT for my needs (I'll keep the Caterham for hoons)
- after visiting an owner of an immaculate 930 with 30k miles and being shown bills for restoration of the inevitable rust areas ( circa £15k) , I realised I wanted a car ith this work already done
- one of the last built cars would be preferable
So after months of looking for cars, I've finally done the deal on this well known car from Impact Bumpers. 1988 3.2 Carrera Sport that has been completely stripped back to bare metal, with all rust areas replaced etc. The previous owner , Andy, has done an excellent job with the car and the attention to detail is impressive. Just need to finish off a few bits to same level, to do justice to the work to date.
Anyway will pick car up later this week, so will report back my views on car and share a few more piccies.
For the mo here is a photo of car from the past

Cheers Dave

Personally, although I know it's original, I'd remove the whaletail and go with clean rear deck or possibly ducktail.
.
Already checking out prices for 2nd hand clean desk .
. Be good to have choice of swapping between them, , according to whether wanting the lary or clean look.DJWuk said:

I bought an 89 3.2 from eclectic cars last year (similar condition to yours crimp but white) and am delighted with it.
I see the posts on other topics some like them some don't, probably worth driving a few of them as the good ones drive infinitely better than the rough ones before making a final decision.
Fantastic cars enjoyed reading the commentary over the weekend and glad I'm not the only one who digs them!
Cheers mc

I've done the same collected my 88 car last week, a minter.
That's after a GT2 2 x 996 Turbo's and a 930, amongst others!
Love it, great little simple cars.
Yep your thread finalised my decision on this car, as always good to hear someone's opinion who has driven lots of different 911's. That's after a GT2 2 x 996 Turbo's and a 930, amongst others!

Well I've had an afternoon of fettling.
Wheels off jet washed and cleaned under arches, cleaned out all B Posts and then treat them to a wax oil and it is as mint underneath as on top which is a relief.
Few other "crimp jobs" to do which is all part of the fun with these IB cars, made up with it.

I did the same on my 911, after I bought it a deep clean 12 hours in total,it was a relief it was as good under the car as the top. I had all the sill cover's off the lot, I only found a small bit of rust 50p size on the sill cover itself on the inside. So was very happy, with that as its a 87 car.
I used Dintrol both types, Por 15 came out very well.

Good to hear all the above.
Really enjoyed the Caterham over the last year as easy and relatiively inexpensive to perform a lot of maintenance / upgrades etc.
Hoping the 3.2 will be the same. Already planning to powder coat the Alternator fan after reading this :- http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technic...
