Best place to buy lens

Just got myself a nikon d3100 with the standard 18 - 55 lens

Would like to get a 35mm f1.8 lens - seem to be about £140 from jessops etc. anywhere offering better deals?

I have one. It's awesome.

But consider getting rid of the 18-55 for an 18-70 instead. So much better

I still haven't bought anything, really can't decide of I want 35 or 50 mm

The 1.8f is the most important part but some reviewers prefer the 35 and some the 50.

Any thoughts?

I have a D5100 and have added the 35mm lens to it. I took a risk and bought the lens off eBay for £90 iirc.

It's great! Nice and sharp. I haven't tried the 50mm btw.

35mm on a crop makes a nice general purpose lens. 50mm would be better for portraits but a bit tight for most other things.

Had both the 50 and 35. They really are both so good that you can discount any considerations with regard to image quality. That only leaves you one difference, the focal length. So seeing as you have an 18-55 zoom lens, you have both those focal lengths available to try out. Use your lens glued (not literally) at 50mm for a day or two and then do the same at 35mm and see what works best for you.

FWIW I do agree with the above in that the 35 is definitely more versatile. The 50mm is better suited to portraits though and longer lenses make it easier to throw the background out of focus.

I have got the 50mm on a D90 and fully agree with this. You have to be a surprising distance away to get all of a toddler in frame.

Mine is the f1.4 and the image quality is mind-boggling but I am learning all about razor thin dof when it is wide open....

Really it's personal preference

Tbh, I'd prefer the 50mm to 35mm - I know others who would disagree.


However, isn't the 50mm around £100 more than the 35mm? Do you need to buy anything else for your new camera? bag? speedlite? etc...
