964rs: replacements for my magnesiums?
Discussion
My 964rs has not been used as much as it deserves so she is in for a full service and general tidy up. It is an original car bought off Nick Faure (unforgettable test drive with him at the helm
)when they were unloved and cheap.
She is still running on the original magnesiums which am told i should probably put in bubble wrap and store. The question is then which wheels to put on her as a replacement given the rs was running on slightly wider fronts the cheap option of a set of cups doesnt seem quite right. I would like to keep as true to the originals in terms of size, weight and size as possible.
Grateful for received wisdom
Thanks

I used Tramont in France & they built some perfect copies of the Speedline 3 piece wheels found on the 993 GT2 for me. They will do any width / offset you want & the quality is excellent. The outers are polished & then anodised so shouldn't corrode like a polished wheel will. The rear wheel is 11Jx18 & I weighed it at 11.4 KG.

Takes them about 5 weeks to make & deliver.

Assume you use your car for occasional road miles and not for trackdays ?
If so then you should stick with original pattern 17 inch Cup 1s if you can get them , failing that use the commonly available and cheaper replica Cup1s eg Mille Miglia. The people to talk to are Jasmine as they specialise in Porsche type alloy wheels.
The original 964RS mag wheels are half an inch wider at front and same width at rear as standard 964 Cup 1s , all on ET55 offsets . For road driving and road tyres that is not going to make any difference.
I did a lot of track driving in my 964RS and used 996C4 wheels , 17x7 and 17x9 , which were only made for the 1998 model year , were cheap strong and light....but not the right look to be admired. I did start off with using the mags but cracked one on a kerb at Oulton Park....

Cup 1's from the 968 or 928S will fit.
The rears are just right --- ET 55, the fronts are ET 68 (I think) so need a 15mm spacer to make them look like the original wheels --- in Al rather than Mag alloy obviously.
I have a set from a 928S (so with the pressure sensors which are rare in themselves), plus the spacers to fill all four arches, if you are interested.
The alternative is something traditional like period BBS E28's --- 18" mags.
Again I have a set that was build by BBS for a 964RS --
I have accumulated all this stuff in the ownership of four different 964RS's ...
(Or you could get a spare set of poorer Mags to run the car on as Porsche intended --- and keep yours for best ?)

What is the problem you guys are encounting running on their original Magnesium wheels?
Can you still find original wheels and are they that much more expensive that you want to run something else?
They're twenty years old and a b*tch to keep corrosion free, added to which any twenty year old mag wheel will be like an Aero bar, which in turn means they need X raying to ensure their integrity. Can you still find original wheels and are they that much more expensive that you want to run something else?
Best off refurbing them and sticking them in a dry cupboard under the stairs, loft or spare room.

Follow the link in the above post and you'll see another (better) OE option is available . . . . .If so then you should stick with original pattern 17 inch Cup 1s if you can get them failing that use the commonly available and cheaper replica Cup1s eg Mille Miglia. I am going to have to think about this one the car is in with JZM with Steve who is super helpful and professional. One of their options is Fuchs.
It's not a great rush a little bit longer is not going to make a difference. Note Slippydiff post which I will check out.
ChrisW I am curious about the BBS wheels having just had 10 made up for my bolt replica 1972 Le Mans Weslake Capri project which are absolute monsters!
Am not a frequent forum poster how would I contact you?
