What could be causing this clang? with Vid!

I'm getting a drivers side clanging from my '98 C240. Car has recently passed an MOT fine, all bushes and linkages seem good and tight. I can only think it's a drive shaft issue. Coils haven't snapped.

Any ideas?

Does sound like a broken spring, are you 100% certain it's not.
Another alternative is straight from Cerbera experience, rear pads rattling, lost or no retaining spring on the pads. Another one is CV joint on the drive shaft.

I've had a good look at the springs, and there was no evidence of them breaking - like I say, the sound is 'cyclical' implying that it is caused by rotation.

If you have a dust shields behind the disc have a look at them, if they become rusty and get loose they could start "touching" around the discs and you have the noise.

As an update to this, it transpired that two things had happened - the pad retained spring had moved slightly, and that allowed the rear outer pad more leeway to move about. In addition, the anti squeals shim had become unstuck from the pad and was rattling about.


All sorted and the noise has vanished!
