My gf's Focus has recently started losing coolant, and I've tracked it down to the area around the auxiliary belts, but can't quite see where it's coming from. As you can see in this photo the coolant is collecting on the little plastic tray beneath the belts, so I'm guessing it's the water pump leaking, but I can't really tell, anyone have any ideas as to the likelihood of this or what else it might be?

Thanks!

If it's a 1.6 or 1.4 then it could be the water pump or the thermostat housing which fits on the front of the block

It's the 1.6 - my understanding is that the thermostat housing is on the right hand side of the engine as you're looking at it from the front? i.e. the opposite side to the belts & where the coolant is pooling?

I've had a good poke around everywhere, and the only place I could see that is wet is around the belts, and seemingly around the middle of them, and I think the water pump is one of the middle wheels in the serpentine belt, so it seems to point to the water pump.

Thermostat is on the right only on 1.8 & 2.0 engines the 1.6 sits behind the water pump underneath the alternator

It looks like this & is easier to spot from underneath

As a side note if a water pump is on its way out you normally get a tell tale line on the bonnet where it gets sprayed with coolant

Ahh ok, thanks, I'll have a look at that then.
