going to attempt to waxoyle the chim this weekend. I dont want to waxoyle on top of potential crap on the chassis but similarly I dont want to scrape back "past" any original coating. Any advice? wire brush around the entire chassis like brushing your teeth and then spray it on generously?
eek. just done some searches on PH and seems a lot more to it than I bargained for. 
was hoping to spend a morning or afternoon doing it but now appears it can be an epic...I have read of
rubbing down chassis
applying anti rust stuff then leaving 24 hours
then applying hammerite/POR15
then waxoyling
it sounds like a job that would leave the car off the road for 6 months....
is this really the way to go? if so, what are the best materials to use and where do i get them?

IMHO, no. Rub down then por15; sorted. Have a lok at http://rust.co.uk/
But this will still take at least a good weekend done properly

I smell of waxoyle. My hair smells, my ears smell. everything smells. Smells of satisfaction too mind. Sorted. One pit, one waxoyle kit, one silly white overall and one wire brush. Sorted. :thumbsup:
once again, thanks to all concerned. So this week its been bringing her back to A1. Totally cleaned and waxoyled the chassis (which was still in bloody good nick), took out and replaced the headlight lens with a small stone chip, sourced the electrical problem causing the lack of brake lights and repaired with new wiper motor park switch. Fitted front splitter and aerodynamics seem better - its more glued to the road at high speed.
Phew. Next weekend will be a polishing/waxing session before VW.

I probably would never have attempted half the things I do without the guidance of PH and Steve Heaths bible. Trying to learn as I go and so far, so good. sense of satisfaction when it all works too.

Why are people paying so much to have their cars waxoyled? and why does it take 3 days to do a one hour job? 
waxoyling : put car on ramp, remove wheels, make cardboard mask for brakes.
clean off loose rust, spray on hammerite or other rust preventative paint if required.
put waxoyl in pressure fed gun, apply to car.
clean floor under car to avoid being sued by anyone foolish enough to walk on there! (waxoyl is slippery stuff! lol)
job done .. where's 3 days in that lot? typically 70 or 80 quid covers it including supplying the waxoyl!
Some garages really do take the piss with stuff like this .. winter checks is another .. check antifreeze and top up screenwash, 60 quid thankyou! .. pah! makes me so angry

I have to save my satisfaction for the quick and easy jobs which seems to revolve around removing wheels for puncture repairs recently
