Wide angle convertor

Just thought I would let people know about a wide angle converter I bought for the grand total of £9.45 although I think it's gone up in price since then.
We are currently having an extension on our house and I wanted a wider view than the 18mm of my kit lens. I cannot afford a proper wide angle lens at the moment due to the extension sucking up all of my money. I do however want to capture a larger view of the works-in-progress for our own records so thought I would give one of these a try:

Mounted to the front of my 18-55mm kit lens on my D3100, it looks like this:
I took a reference shot at 18mm with the right-hand edge of the frame aligned with the outside wall of the house:
And here's the money shot, with the same wall aligned on the right-hand edge of the frame:
The camera takes longer to focus and struggles in the low light. The corners of the shot are obscured and I've lost lots of sharpness especially away from the center of the picture. The obscured corners go away from about 24mm on the kit lens, but doing this defeats the purpose of the lens.
Does it produce a good photograph? No.
Does it do what I want? Yes. It captures the room in its current state.
Does it do a better job than the panorama setting on my Galaxy S3? In low-light yes because this mode doesn't support the flash. I'll have to try if I get the opportunity with more natural light in the room.
