I think my machine is dying :(
Discussion
My machine has been behaving perfectly (or as perfectly as a 5 year old machine running millenium edition does), then yesterday the mouse started intermittently just freezing up, regardless of what i was doing. It would unlock after a second or 2, but do the same thing again after a while, lasting longer, until eventually the machine would completely lock. Ive upgraded to win2k, but still seems to be having problems. Im thinking it could just be the mouse, but i dont see why it would lead to the whole machine locking up...
Could be one of many things from the information provided.
If the mouse is 5 years old then i would replace it anyway. see if that works.
Try reinstalling the mouse driver. especially if its a non microsoft driver.
If that doesn't work and you can (without the system locking) run an up to date antivirus program see if anything shows up.
If not then backup as much as you can.
Delete the HardDrive Partition(s) (all of em), then erase the master boot record:
"fdisk /mbr" on the dos command line will do the job.
Then repartition, format and install windows.
If that doesn't work i would say something in the hardware is on it way out, at 5yrs its getting on a bit so may be wise to upgrade or get a new system.

Well, im on my 3rd windows install of the weekend, and i think its time for a new machine!
Ive tried 98se, me, and 2k. All of them seem to still have problems of intermittent freezing. Im trying unplugging various peripherals in hope at the moment. Ive cleaned out all the system fans etc. but they were pretty clear surprisingly.
So far its not locked up whilst ive been typing this (mouse unplugged) so maybe there is hope for a simple solution..

Memory? Try just taking it out and replacing it, or running with only half of it it (check the manual for valid combinations of slot occupancy), then the other half. The simple act of removing and re-inserting can be enough to fix (or at least prolong the life of) a dodgy connection.
