Can anyone give me an estimate as to how long it should take to remove the diff from my cerbera?

I have mine in a garage and they are stating a day to remove and a day to refit.

Surely this is overkill?

It was a garage local to me recommended on here as well.

Took me 2 days on axle stands and that's changing the bushes too. I would say 1/2 day max with proper ramp / garage equipment

Drain oil
24 driveshaft bolts If you want to remove the output flanges to make it a little easier.
Move driveshafts aside.
Exhaust off,
Prop bolts off
Heat shield off
6 front diff mount bolts
1 rear diff mount bolt
4 mount bolts
Drop the diff on your foot.

A decent garage should have it done in 3 hours MAX.

Refitting is the reverse of removal (do I have to pay Haynes if I say that?)

As ridds said but check if the diff has locking nuts on the back, if it does then they can be a real PITA and will probably need to be cut off as mine did.

Oh - and I dropped the diff on my hand not my foot as the final step.

Thanks for the opinions.

I went to the garage today and had a chat - the chap was insistent that it is a big job with lots of things that can go wrong (which I kind of accept)

I mentioned getting a second opinion on here and he rubbished the estimates, saying that the abs rings had to be removed as well because the diff wouldn't twist and drop out without these being removed, and also the hubs being removed to move driveshafts to provide clearance. He said ring Dom at tvr power if I didn't believe him...

They will only start the job at time plus, with £70/hr labour rates and 16-20 hours (worst case) provisioned for removal and refitting. I have sought a second opinion from a tvr specialist who said 3 hours max so will be moving the car unless the consensus is that the original garage were right??

Well he clearly still talking out of his arse as no TVR has ABS and it can be twisted, with ramps i could get the diff out in under three hours easy.

I managed to get it out using axle stands and resting it on my chest.

When he said abs rings he meant the speed sensor rings on the diff that the driveshafts connect to. Gold with notches around. Obviously these are unused as like you say the tvr doesn't have abs.

I think he was just trying to warn me that any stuck bolts, problems etc would be labour intensive for them and therefore a big bill for me. Nonetheless I am concerned that leaving it with them will be a limitless bill for me.

Give him a copy of the service manual, as it will tell him how to remove the diff as he clearly has no idea. I would ring Dom and ask him, if it was me!

He clearly doesn't want the work.

16-20 hours at £70ph? To remove and refit a diff, he's taking the piss.

What are you doing to the diff? Why is it being removed?

If they are talking the best part of £2,000 (once the vat is added) they must be doing something else too.

Professionals who know what they are doing are sooo fast.

When I was lazy a couple of years ago I had a clutch renewed on my chim at Neal Garners while I waited.

They were completed in 1 1/2 hours!

Yup move it to another garage.

For various reasons I recently had to remove the diff - with the output flanges (or ABS rings if you don't know what you're talking about) AND the prop still attached. This was with the car just raised a foot off the floor, not even on ramps. Took me a weekend.

Hi

I have had my car removed to another garage now, one which used to look after my elise and I absolutely trust.

The owner of the first garage was very belligerent and a bit of a fool to be honest. I can see it is his prerogative to work on tvrs at cost plus, rather than estimating, but even so some of the things he was saying were plain wrong. Live and learn.

I am now using topgear automotive whom I was very impressed with during past work. Clearly I cannot divulge the original garage, but I will suggest people use due diligence when using someone for the first time.
