Hi Guys

I'm off to the lakes next week with the 'rents.

They are going to be off walking so I'm going to pinch his car and head out to see some of the sights.

I know of Hardknott pass but are there any must see routes? I hear hardknott is busy so approach early morning.

Thanks smile

Fingers crossed the weather holds.

Oh, and its a Kuga so nothing sporty.

As nobody has dived in, how about:

Ambleside
Wrynose Pass
Hardknott Pass
Birker Fell Road to Ulpha
Torver
Coniston
Ambleside

- that gets you up the "must do" steep narrow scenic passes, followed by a quiet fast open fell road and then a fast slightly dangerous A road (sharp crests on corners!) to Coniston and back.

Hardknott and Wrynose will be busy all day at this time of year, be prepared to stop and reverse a bit.

An alternative which is more of a drivers route (and still really spectacular scenery if clear) especially if early is:

Ambleside
The Struggle (very steep!)
Kirkstone Pass
Keswick
Whinlatter Pass
Buttermere
Honister Pass
Back to Keswick
Back toAmbleside on the A591

Hope you have fun but seriously look out for sheep, walkers and cyclists everywhere.

Braithwaite/Keswick over Newlands pass to Buttermere, walk around the lake, pub and ice cream in the village. Then back across Honister Pass to Braithwaite/Keswick.

Depending on where you are staying, of course.

Newlands pass is stunning.

I plotted this for a few friends that were doing a bit of tootle round here and wanting to see some classic Motoring News/ RAC roads.

Penrith to Eskdale:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=A592&daddr...

Eskdale to BackBarrow (Google maps goes a bit mad if I try and do this in a "oner")

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Eskdale+Y+H+A,...

I admit I've included Tarn Hows in there which is a lovely road but will have touroids a plenty but it's only for a short while. (Between F and G near the top of Coniston)

Gives chance to do more of the Scissors (H to L) as well.

Other half:

Back Barrow to Devils Bridge Kirkby Lonsdale:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Lakeland+Motor...

A- B is a big climb with some great views and stops looking up Windermere.

C is the hairpins at the Masons Arms. In the past they've given permission to a Time Control there with the strange scene of evening drinkers sat out at the tables watching the cars come down the hairpins and stop next to them!

After that there's a bit of a choice:

C to E is gloriously slow and technical road that winds it way through the valley but you don't have to take that route. E is a junction and should you head west beforehand you can go through Winster Ford used to this day on many a classic car run (might not be great depending on weather though!) as it is the route goes right past it.

I-L is also a slow technical road that opens up into a winding fell road with many a hump. There may be the odd gate I admit though.

Best of the A6 after that followed by the Bretherdale loop M to Q

and then down Foxes Pulpit and Barbondale.

Kirkstone pass to glennriding - check

Return via "the struggle" meeting a motorhome was frankly the hardest bit of driving I have ever done.

Up to aire force tomorrow
