Anyone help please?.......my brother (yes really) has a 2002 X Type 2.5 V^ petrol...which I think is the 4 wheel drive version.

He tells me he has a sound coming from the transmission that's a bit like the wheel rubbing on the wheelarch.

His regular mechanic is telling him it's big repair - gearbox or maybe diff - that isn't worth it owing to the value of the car.

As it happens, the car is a 1 owner genuine low mileage car, so he's inclined to get it repaired.

Anyone know of someone who can do this in the Woking (Surrey) area?

Sounds like transfer box (yes his is AWD) would be the usual culprit if it's an early one. About £800-1000 to do. Worth doing if it's one he plans to keep.

If it's just the diff it's a lot cheaper.

Worth finding a specialist to diagnose it correctly first. Stethoscope job was done on mine thoroughly to find exactly what was wrong - transfer box and diff. They let me listen too to prove the point.

My 2002 3.0 X-type developed a similar issue. The noise on mine wasn't too bad, but I could feel a slight juddering every time I crawled to a halt.

Because I caught it early, mine was reparable with a rebuild of the transfer box bearings and a refill of transfer oil. I think it cost about £400 as there is still some labour involved.

My tip would be - don't just drive around for miles and miles as the problem will get worse and you will need the full £1000 job.
