Louder with half baffle

Possibly a bit of a silly post, but can one have half the baffles removed? Ive got a pre cat sports piped up sound system, and believe without baffles the exhaust would be too loud (debatable)

What can one do realistically (without affecting back pressure etc) to make a TVR louder, but not too loud?

Bob I personally feel the pre cat V8S is plenty loud enough without removing the baffles. I also think it is a nicer sound than the hollow 'no baffle' sound too, but again thats a personal thing . How long have you had the updated exhaust bits, I assume Y piece only as sound tone and volume changes all the time as the wadding inteh bafles hardens/burns . Perhaps you've listen to other cars I thought why doesn't mine sound like that . Get someone you trust to drive your car past you standing by the road side, beleive you me, they always sound better from the outside.

would make sense that if you removed half the baffles it would dampen the sound still but not as much as before

Hi Harry To be honest, this may just be a case of stuck in the car, never hearing anyone else drive it. Despite sounding quieter, the sound of the V8 inside is not nearly as good as the sound from the outside, at least when idling. The Y piece was on the car before I bought it, and Ive had the ACT sports pipes for around 2 months/1000+ miles or so.

Part of the reason I want to know more about removing baffles, is down to my *really* wanting the V8 to pop and bang more. I would also enjoy another 25% volume

Why do you say without baffles, the car sounds hollow? Can you explain the sound, and have you ever heard a Rover V8 without baffles?

re: the wadding inside the exhaust, how long does it take to go (Ive heard years, and also 2k miles, dont know what to expect) and how much more will the car pop and bang when the wadding is burnt?

Surely if I pay for an hours labour next time Im in the shop, I can have the wadding removed. Is this a good idea?

the sound would be still dampened but not as much as before removing the baffles! maybe if you remove 50% baffles you get 50% of the dampening... but i suspect the cavity left would give extra resonance (whether you like it or not only you will be able to tell). the hollowness refered to above i liken to driving through a tunnel but only between certain revs, probably the natural resonance of the metal (when I had it on the chimaera it seemed to be "boomy" at about 1500-2000rpm - it was better but sounded slightly odd, so i had the perforated pipes in the box replaced instead)

Straight through baffles on your V8 S do not restrict back pressure they absorb noise if you took them of and had a straight through exaust sytem the restriction on gasses would be no different. If you sleeve half the perforated inner pipe on your baffles you would increase the noise. straight through pipes with no restrictions will actually decrease bottom end but increase top end and visa versa by restricting the gasses, its to do with valve overlap and scavenging in the pot. ie when you restrict the gases you leave a proportion of spent gas behind as the valves close which inreases the explosion at bottom end but this will have an adverse affect at higher revs as you need to clear the spent gas quicker ie straight through pipes.

So yes the car will be louder with straight through perforated pipes, but will loose some performance at higher revs?
