having had a mk1 for a while im pretty sure it wasn't as monster truck like as this mk2. Handles amazing still but lots of body roll. Anyone bought some budget coil-overs off eBay?

Don't do it. They are only any good at all if you want the "stanced/slammed" look and don't care at all about ride & handling and only want them to last 18 months. You really do get what you pay for.

I've got ebay's finest coilovers on my mk1 (financially deprived student ). They're not as bad as people will have you believe. they are ok if you don't have the car absolutely decked. They are certainly better than the worn oem stuff I had on before. After 2 years they are still in good condition I.e I can still wind the collars up and down.

The eBay coilovers are okay so long as you accept that you are getting what you pay for. Also if you have wheels with a diameter larger than 15" then the ride quality will really suffer as you also lose the inherrent damping from the sidewall on the tyres. As with many things, but the best you can afford. But if that's a set of eBay coilovers then go for it. I have then on my Mk1 and while it's not exactly the best ride around they are acceptable since I replaced the 17" wheels with OE 15" ones from a Mk2.
