bit of an odd one but anyone know whether a 996 tiptronic returns better fuel economy in automatic or manual mode?just curious!

Probably no one outside of Porsche knows.

The auto shift is pretty fuel efficient as there is a lot riding on this. When these cars are fuel economy tested and CO2 emissions tested the auto mode is used and it is designed to game the test.

Essentially one would be shifting the transmission in manual mode but essentially mimicking the shifting done in auto mode.

With 6 ratios instead of 5 and no torque converter (which wastes power) then the manual will always be capable of better economy everywhere except slow town driving (urban cycle). Official figures for both should be in the manual somewhere.

All insignificant these days though - the economy difference is small and who these days is going to buy a 9-15 year old car to do so many miles a year (20k+?) that'd it'd make much of a difference in the fuel bill? Even so, there'll be more of a difference than that between individual cars for sale.

When waiting in long jams I often move it into neutral to reduce engine load. I do this to stop the "creep" function which prevents rolling back. I think this has an effect on fuel consumption. However, that for just 6,000 miles or so annually year one or two mpg either way is neither here nor there.

Sorry Goose, I was looking at comparisons between driving the tiptronic in it's different modes (auto and manual).

In auto mode it (almost) always pulls away in second which I imagine is for fuel economy. It also LOVES changing up to fifth at the earliest opportunity!

Wondered if anyone had noticed a difference in economy when going up and down the box using the buttons rather than letting it work it out for itself.

On gen 1 box, the last version of the tiptronic the box would calculate the optimal shift based on the driving style. It was able to work unlimited shift pattens however the previous version had 250 pre set programmes.

Manual on tiptronic box.

Either way minimal difference.
