I feel the beginning of the end for AML I certainly wouldn't buy a MB engined Aston and AML will become a division of MB in time, very sad news for the brand.

But you would buy a Ford/Jaguar engined one?

I think it's a good think. The 6.2 V8 is a fantastic engine.

ETA: I guess you wouldn't have a Pagani either?

My thoughts too. IIRC, that was to extend the life (significantly ?) of supply of the V12 engine 'blocks' which Aston then 'enhance' ?

At risk of stating the obvious, this means one of three things - either a long time til AMG engines come into play, a cancellation of the Ford agreement (perhaps there is no or a low minimum quantity promised to Ford ?) or a reasonable period of time when both Ford & AMG engines will be used, depending on the model

From the Aston Martin website...

Specifically a bespoke V8.
This is good news for the next generation Vantage!

yes

AMG V8s and Ford/Aston V12s

To be honest, this is fantastic news; have you seen the power this engine can be tuned to be produced?? Genuine Ferrari rivals can be made now and some decent gearboxes will be available.

Thank you MB cloud9

I'm happy very about this, think it's great news for the next Vantage.

Interesting where Aston go power wise with the C63 having an option of 487hp from Merc, you'd think they'd need something a bit more for the much higher priced Vantage. But that would mean the V12's would need to be much more powerful to keep the range in order. Didn't someone mention 780hp somewhere....

Hopefully not the crap one from the SLS though.

This is great news, the costs to engineer a new engine are way beyond what I understand AML could do alone, the Merc engines are epic (C63 etc etc) and I would gladly buy a new AM with one up front.

Great news for the next generation of cars I think.

They get 510bhp out of that engine in C63 Black Series spec.

I like the gearbox in the SLS. Suits the GT side of the car. Have you tried the SLS GT's gearbox? It's got different software to make the changes a lot faster.

Very true, but that's a car around the same price as the next Vantage will likely be. I was more meaning they had to be higher than a car with a much lower price.

Maybe the 500bhp will be the magic figure for the next V8

Same robotic manual unit as the 458. You can change the software to make it change as hard/fast as you need it to, depending on the car and it's projected lifespan. The slow(ish change in the SLS is a choice; longevity and GT cruising ability.

Can AML make/buy software that can switch between modes? Along with switchable dampers, the character of the car can be changed at the bush of a button scratchchin

Fantastic news. The 6.2 V8 is an incredible engine, as is the 5.5 v8 twin turbo unit. Either of these in the new Vantage would be amazing.

Not quite true. It's a dual clutch unit in the SLS, as used in California/458/F12/FF, which replaced the robotic single clutch manual in 430/599

In the 458 it's rated as one of the very best dual clutch sports car boxes ever. As you say, Merc slow the shift down for longevity but have been working on that more recently IIRC - the SLS black for instance has improved shift times

Going back to the point about AMG V8s and touching on the various comments above in relation to same, it will indeed be an interesting balancing act between what kind of power Aston's AMG V8s have and what they do with the V12s to stop them overlapping, especially as one assumes the V12s are heavier. Can't really see a place for a 565bhp V12 with a 500ish (give or take) lighter V8 also in the line up. They certainly couldn't do that in the same car (e.g. vantage) although arguably less of an issue if they use solely V8s in vantage and solely V12s in GTs

Perhaps as brought up by others recently, the V12 will go forced induction, with the Rapide hydrogen race car being early testing of same
