Just watched this on Sky Arts, and thought it was great!
Felt a little odd watching the G&R stuff without Axl, but it got me thinking.
Who was more key to the sound of G&R, Axl or Slash?
Whilst Myles Kennedy, (vocalist on this show), is certainly no Axl, they sounded bloody good. After seeing G&R with Axl at Reading Rock a couple of years ago, I know which I preferred!
Either way, G&R had some riffs eh!

I've seen it too, great performance and I particularly liked the way the Godfather solo led into Sweet Child o' Mine. The crowd seemed to love that change too, they went mental.
For me Axl is the key to the G 'n R sound, because when I hear Slash with Snakepit, or solo or even with half of GnR in Velvet Revolver, it sounds to me like a new band with different ideas, whereas Chinese Democracy... well, I didn't like it, but it sounded to me like a continuation of GnR's work, like the same composer and singer (no surprise there of course) but with a stand-in guitarist.
It's a bit like Axl moved things on from the Use You Illusion albums while Slash took a step back to Appetite, or probably even before that. I prefer Slash's stuff, but to me there are no new ideas in it really, just a few new riffs in what are conventional rock songs. Even Appetite pushed boundaries when it was released and sounded fresh in a way that Velvet Revolver and Slash's solo albums did not.

You think so? If it is the sameness oncert I have on DVD then it's one of the worst crowds I have ever seen. So boring in fact that it ruins the atmosphere of the entire concert.
