I have recently changed the rear tyres on my chimaera from old Falkens to Uniroyal rainsports v-rated tyres. It still has half-worn dunlops on the front. A simple transition I thought but the car is all over the place - feels very twitchy and unbalanced above 60mph and has even snaked around sweeping motorway bends on me twice (!) After more than 5 years of ownership I am more scared of it than ever. I have checked the tyre pressures - 26psi rear and 24psi front as they should be. I don't know whats wrong. The tyres had excellent reviews. Any suggestions on what has happened and how I can correct it?

Those pressures sound high to me. Try running them a little softer

I feel your pain, I fitted rainsports 2 front and back a few weeks ago, again after hearing good reviews. They initially felt horrendous and was advised to give them a bit more time to bed in and increase tyre pressures. I ve now done about 1300 miles on them and set pressures to 26/28 and I've even tried adjusting my coil overs but still doesn't feel as good as my 9 year old bridgestones did!
I now find rear end grip pretty good, really good in the wet but the front just doesn't feel write and I'm running out of ideas as since messing with coil overs I think I ve made the hole situation worseweeping

thanks for that big mike. I was about to try changing the fronts to rainsports too.
I haven't tried it in the wet yet.
Can anyone recommend someone in the Blackpool area who might be able to set up my chim for a reasonable fee?

I was told that Uniroyal rainsports are NOT suitable for TVR rear wheel drive!

I have Rain-sports on my BMW 320d and have had a set on a VRs Octavia and think they are great.

No reason why they should be poor on a chim, in fact chimpongas runs a set and only has praise for them.

I run standard pressures and have never felt the need to experiment with the pressures.

Maybe they need a little bedding in. I certainly wouldn't mix brands, maybe the tivs a little sensitive with a mix?

They're certainly fine on my Octavia and I know chimp on gas swears by them on his Chim but I cant get mine so I feel happy with the front end, the rears have been fine since the day I fitted them, my problem has always been the front, after increasing tyre pressures and messing with coil overs it does feel better than it did at one point as it did feel dangerous, but now I don't know whether it needs somebody good to set up suspension or me to buckle and buy the R1Rs I should have bought originally

Did you consider Continental Sport Contact 3 ? They seem to be fitted to most of the top sports cars.

Anyone used these tyres or are they not suitable for light TVR`s.

FWIW I fitted the uni royals to my wifes car (just a boring Peugeot) and they felt woeful at first.

After a couple of hundred miles I really questioned if they were fitted correctly and went back to the tyre dealer. They were all fitted correctly but the bloke did say that they come with very deep tread and the crap handling was probably down to the deep blocks just moving around and it should go when they wear a bit.

I wasn't happy but he wasn't up for exchanging.

After about 1500 miles they either got better or we got used to it.

Not sure if that helps at all.

This would definitely be the first thing to check.... make sure the tyres are rotating in the correct direction for the tread pattern.

Matt's right.

But the second thing to do is to get a four wheel alignment done. Should cost about £60 plus VAT.
My car was transformed.

I have now done over 6000 miles on Rain sport 2's all driven pretty hard and they are an excellent tyre in both wet and dry conditions. So good I will be using them again. My pressures are 24 back and 22 front.

Might be worth me dropping my pressures back to 22/24 then now they've got 1300 miles on them but originally it felt like the front end was on marbles and the only way it improved was higher tyre pressures.
Maybe the rain sports like a certain suspension set up as some people are finding them really good on TVRs and others are finding them terrible? As I said my rear end grip was great from the day I fitted them but I just can't get the front to feel how I want it, so much so the other week I genuinely thought about taking them off and fitting R1Rs.

Are those the original (or at least very old tyres) on the front?

I had virtually exactly the same problems with my Griff when I first bought it. It always felt a little twitchy but following a puncture on the rear I replaced the rears with Proxies. The car felt lethal after than and I was scared to overtake or corner.

I guess it could have been something to do with the new soft compound grippy rears and the old hard compound part warn fronts. A pair of new proxies for the front too and the handling was much better...

And then replace the suspension with Gaz Mono's and a geo setup...and it got much better again...

And then replaced the steering rack as it has a small amount of play and the handling is now great.

Don't skim over the words "....and a geo setup....."

Like with other things, getting the hardware is all very well, but unless it is set up properly by someone with the correct equipment and knowledge, you might as well not have wasted your money on the hardware.

4 wheel geo set up transformed my little mx5 from being skittery and frankly rubbish into a focussed little thing on a fast road set up. Given the power in a TVR, I can only imagine it is essential to get it checked at least? Best 50 I have ever spent.

Rather more involved setting GEO correctly on a TVR so allow about £250. It is essential though!

Some tyres just don't mix

My G33 was stable and pointy with Dunlop SP9000 all round, swapped the rears for Toyo proxes and it was as scary as scary thing, doing tramlining, being all vague, horrible turn in etc. Swapped the fronts to Toyo proxes and all was well again
