Can anyone shed some light on this little problem for me please?

I have built a new PC out of a load of spares and done a clean install of XP Professional. I then wanted to get all the updates, patches, XP SP2 etc so put in a spare broadband modem and connected it to the line.

After inputting my user name and password, I got normal from internet access and can see that the broad band service is available. However, after about 5 minutes, I can no longer access any websites and get "Cannot find server" message - even though I can see that my broad band connection (1mps) is present and 'working'.

In frustration, I usually turn the machine off, have a think, and come back a couple of hours later. Switch it on, log on the net - and it all works...for another 5 minutes and then the same happens...I can no longer access any websites or even update my antivirus software etc. BUT, I can see from my modem's control panel that the broad band connection is present and transmitting/receiving!

So what's the score. I haven't done anything different in building this PC to any other I have done. The BIOS is fresh, antivirus/stinger scans indicate no virus, if it was the XP firewall (normal settings) then there should be no intermittant (but a constant) problem, and I have reinstalled the modem more than once.

The spec I am using is:

Athlon 1 Mhz
Abit KT7 RAID Mobo
Old 8Gb 33 ATA HDD
Zoom Hayes PCI BB modem

If anyone can help me and put me out of my misery, I would be glad to hear from them!

TIA,
Bryan

Just a thought but are you disconnecting your original BB connection, it could be that your isp is detecting 2 connections on the same username/password and disconnecting the last one.

Hi and thanks for the reply.

No, this is happening with just the one PC connected - and left connected. My main PC and laptop run through a router/wiress system. I unplug the cable out of this and into the freshly built system, and then log on.

When I revert back to my old PC and laptop - they work perfectly well and don't disconnect or anthing like that - hence I am very puzzled about this!

Who is your broadband through?
Slightly related, i had a problem once which meant i had to disconnect my router and plug the modem directly into my PC, i then couldnt get a broadband connection until i plugged it back into router. think it was something to do with DHCP not recognising the PC direct so the IP address was wrong.
I am with NTL and i ended up opening up there program called correct connect this allowed me to renew the IP address and all was fine.

Not sure if its the same sort of problem your getting but hope this helps.

On my old PC and laptop, it is a combined ADSL modem, wiress and router. It uses the LAN connector on the main PC mobo and wireless link to the laptop. I'm not using this at all with my bits 'n' pieces PC I have knocked up. Therefore only using a PCI modem with that, the phone cable plugged into that via a filter/splitter. The service proved is freedom2surf - with no complaints about them, and a reliable connection when using the other machines.

Well, I have scrapped the installation, reformatted the HDD and reloaded everything, and it works. I made the mistake of connecting the first installation to the internet without the protection of a firewall - and may therefore have picked up something unsavoury that kicks in to kill my connection to the server.

I ran Norton AV Corporate and Stinger, but neither found anything. I even downloaded the blaster antidote, but it didn't find blaster. However, an absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence - so that's what I still suspect. Anyway, the fresh install means that it is all OK now.
