18 inch wheels on a Boxster

We have just ordered a new 2.7l Boxster. We upgraded to the Cayman 18inch wheels. Since then I've been wondering if we should have gone bigger. My question is will the 18 inch wheels provide a smoother more economical ride than the 19 or 20 inch wheels? Granted the bigger wheel looks better but surely the car was designed around 18 inch? Any thoughts?

There's no question that the 18's will give a more compliant ride. That said, however, I test drove a new Cayman with 20's and it was a better ride than my Gen 1 which is on 19's with PASM.

I spotted a base 981 Cayman the other day in an underground car park and it looked so good on its 18" rims I almost took a photo on my phone, but resisted.

I Googled this one....



It isn't the wheel design that caught my eye (which is attractive enough) as much as the relationship between the sidewalls, (possibly the rim protection afforded by the tyres - can't recall which brand) and the rims themselves.

It's more than half way towards a true motorsport look like this....

Mogulboy, can't thank you enough for your post. You can imagine we've put down a lot of cash to get or first Porsche, the thought of getting it wrong at the first hurdle is a nightmare. I'm starting to feel good about it now. Many thanks
