I've tried to quit several times over the past few years and am always inspired by people who suddenly just stop - has anyone just done that? And was it a more general reflection of your personality, i.e. are you prone to sudden and entrenched lifestyle changes?

I read somewhere that psychologically a sudden decision about smoking has a greater success rate. Allen Carr didn't work for me, before you ask, but seems to be along the same principles smile

When I was on YTS the bosses son smoked. Over Christmas he had a lung infection that turned out to be very serious (over 20 years ago now can't remember what it was but it was a big deal) he gave up smoking cold turkey and to my knowledge never smoked again.

Willy, yes, health scares can be a huge motivator.

My mum works on a ward nursing people that have smoked and are pretty much on their last legs, most of them still smoke as do many of the staff, which is more baffling.

myvision did you just stop? How have you found it, any unexpected benefits?

My wife used to smoke. Soon after I met her she said she was going to quit partly because I hated smoking. She'd tried stopping a few times with different methods and nothing ever worked but this time she just stopped. Said that would be her last one ever and that was 6 years ago and she's never gone back.

Cutting down won't work, cold turkey is the only way.

I woke up one day and thought "I don't want to do this any more". Went from fifty a day to zero and haven't craved one since, that was fifteen years ago.

I just decided to finish the pack I had and was not buying any more. After 3 weeks I didn't have the craving for them.
I now can taste things again and am not coughing like mad every morning. Only down side is i put 3.5 stone on but am now going to sort that out.

I gave up last October.

I had tried the patches, the gum,the lozenges and the e-cigarettes but none of them worked for various reasons. So l decided to try and give up again using will power alone.

One random Sunday in October I woke up and found I only had one tag left and I decided that it would be my last. So not quite a spur of the moment as I had wanted to give up but at the same time it wasn't how I'd thought I'd do it.

Yes. I used to smoke rollups and at a party about eight years ago I decided to quit so when someone asked me if they could borrow some tobacco I gave them all of it. I'm not sure why I decided as I was pretty drunk but I do remember it being a clear decision which I was going to stick to.

In the last couple of years I've smoked a few cigars but that's probably the same number in a year as I used to smoke cigarettes in half a day.

same here, but 20 marlboro reds a day, 16 years ago, massive hangover avoided fags for 1 day, day 2 thought i have done 24 hours, stupid to start again now and powered through it like that. wife said i was a miserable git for a month or two.

still avoid cigarettes now, even standing downwind of someone smoking as i know it would be very easy to slip back into it.

News years eve 2004, not as a resolution purely coincidental, after 30 years of around 20 a day + cigars thought fk that it's too expensive and stopped.

I smoked like a chimney, one day I ran upstairs to fetch something and was seriously out of breath, 6 months prior I was in the Para's, this proper scared me and that was that, im 42 now and at an age where it would really be getting a grip so I am glad I haven't smoked since I was 27, OP stick with it, I had tried loads and one day it just kicked in, and no, I don't get the urge.

New years day this year, was previously on 25 - 30 a day and starting to do more exercise: how dumb is it to do a cardio work-out then stuff smoke straight into your lungs? Stopped that day, as planned, and haven't bought a pack since.

I've smoked one or two on a night out, (maybe 4 in total?) but even that desire is slipping away now.

Its taken 6-7 months for the st to stop coming off my lungs when I run, and I'm not sure they'll ever be as efficient as they should be, but I was spending £60 a week, and I've noticed that back in the pot smile

I just gave up, stopped and never looked back, a bit of willpower. Not being able to stop is for fags.

40 a day man here, woke up one morning jumped in the car to go to work, lit up a cig and just thought "what are you doing?" threw it and the packet out of the car window and that was that, I still cannot believe I managed as I have zero will power and enjoyed smoking.

The up side is I feel better, enjoy food, have loads of disposable cash and the money I used to buy cigs went in a jar and soon bought me an Omega Planet Ocean!
