Pregnant at 39, be honest with me.

My good lady wife tells me she is pregnant. (I refuse to say "we're pregnant", as I am not American)
It wasn't exactly planned, not by me at least, but these things happen.
Our first and only daughter was born exactly 12 years ago, the pregnancy test was positive the morning of the birthday party...
So, what are the realistic risks of having a baby at this age?
Are there any special precautions she should take, apart from the usual follic acid, no drinking, no smoking etc?
She's been to the local hospital for a check up already. It is a reputable private hospitable, Medical City, but we are in the Philippines and nothing is quite the same over here.

My mrs gave birth at 37 in the Philippines and just did the usual folic acid and gentle walks the closer it became to full term.
She gave birth via c section in La Salle Hospital and I can dig you out the name of the obgyn we used there if you would like? Real nice lady and her husband was the anaesthetist. Total cost with private room was about 90k with Philhealth taking care of 20k.

My Mrs had our daughter at 41. They said there could be more risk involved. The hospital sorted it all think they just gave her a few extra checks and kept a closer eye on her than they would a younger model. I wish we could have another think that boat has sailed now though.

My mum had me at 40 via a very touch and go c-section. My brother is 9 years older than me so I was the surprise package too. I'm the smartest one of my immediate family and have no medical conditions yet (36 yrs old). So IMO I think you're safe.
I'd be more concerned with your health dude, you don't want to be the grandad dad when the nipper is in juniors.

We had our first daughter last year (my wife was approaching 38 at the time of my daughter's birth) and daughter no.2 is due on New Year's Eve, when my wife will be 39. We had some issues with our first daughter but everything worked out well in the end and she's a beautiful healthy girl. This time around, we opted for a Non Invasive Pregnancy Test paid for privately (circa £700 I think) as we wanted to know whether daughter no.2 had any of the three trisomy problems (i.e. Downs, edwards and Patou). The test can also inform you of the sex of the baby. Preferable to amnio as there is no risk of miscarriage.
Obviously the decision to have such a test is a personal one but we wanted the peace of mind.

I believe it is being considered by the NHS but I doubt it will be introduced in time for yourselves.
EDIT: Sorry, I overlooked the reference to the Philippines. The blood test had to go to a US lab so you may be able to find the same test out there (utilising a US lab) if you want it?

La Salle is a fair way from where we live, in Angeles. I'll mention it to the wife, see what she says. It would be good to get some reassurances, but then if the worst happened, the 'wrong' results, what would you do..... I had Elise when I was 39. Only problem I had was pre eclampsia but was monitored and taken in at 38 weeks. The usual that has been said, folic acid etc. I'm not a drinker or smoker so that was not an issue. Planning on doing it all over again and if successful baby number 2 will arrive when I'm 41.
Will say one thing tho.....

Living in the turd world has its advantages. My daughters birth cost just over £1100 12 years ago, including private room for a week.
To be honest, the only reservations I harbour about the whole thing are what age I will be as the new addition grows up. I'll be pushing 70 when the 'prom night' is going on.
Anyway, thanks for the congrats folks, I'm sure I'll keep you all posted as this latest 'project' develops.
Overall it does sound like it is not the drama some people make it out to be.
I remember a TV commercial in Singapore some 20 years ago, the government were pushing people to have children because the population was dwindling. (because it is so expensive, couples both had to work full time!!!!)
There was one nauseating ad where a young kid with a serious face told his mum something totally absurd (and way beyond his years) about how 30 was getting a bit late to have kids....
