My wife went out with one of her friend's in her Freelander the other day and now she tell's me she'd like an X5 because of the higher drving positon than our current 5 series offers. I've been looking at 2008/09 3.0'd both SE and Msport and just wondered what things to look out for and what experiences people had with their's, good and bad.

I have owned a 2007 3.0d since new. Still have it as I can not find something to replace it.
"Problems" were new pads discs at 50k which I though was early but seems normal, new air con system after 4 years, again told normal. Apart from that a few minor issues, but overall very good. Must haves for me are navi, leather, roof rails didn't get the handy thingy and regret it. Tried with the 20" wheels but ride is too hard and bumpy so stayed with the 19". Winter wheels are 18" and ride is even better.
Its a big car, and when I visit England, I find fitting in English "tesco" car parks is not easy.

We've just bought one, brilliant cars. Ride is abit crashy in our M Sport but nothing unbearable.

Look for water ingress into the boot area. If it goes unsorted it's a new wiring loom, which cost ££££££'s

Bought a 3.0sd new at the end of 2007 and still have it....though it's only done 30k miles. In 20 years of motoring I have never owned a car for more than 2 years.

Later ones are better on fuel economy because of the 8 speed gearbox.

Great car and there is nothing else I have come across that does a good job of shifting our family with all the stuff you need with two young kids and a dog.

Desriable options are Panoramic Roof, Comfort Seats (rare option but much better than the Sports seasts), 7 seats etc.

As mentioned above ride is highly correlated to wheel size...I have 20's which are okay when you have proper tyres and 18" winters that have run flats.

In 30k nigh on 6 years ours has been extremely reliable, I will probably run it into the ground now.

I would agree with the comments, I had the e53 (?) and thought they handled better than the e70 - but the e70 is better in all other ways. In my opinion they are a great all rounder. Twin turbo engine has a lot less lag and much smoother low down.

Thanks for the feedback. Well just to update you all, went and drove an 07 3.0d SE at our local dealer on Saturday, basically the wife and I coudln't say no, the spec was pretty comprehensive including Panoramic roof, Comfort seats, Nav, 7 seats and Xenons amongst other things so once the minor paint defects are sorted we can pick it up. Can't wait although I will miss my E60 525 as it's been a great car and the longest one I've kept at over 6 years. Lets hope the X5 continues the trend.

Nice spec. What's the mileage ? How much did you pay out of interest ? Same age as mine. That car was probably £50k when it was new.

I have a 129,000 mile 2009 E70 X5 xDrive35d SE M57 3.0.It's our 5th X5,

Absolutely brilliant car (I just love the "heated steering wheel" option in Winter).

Just having an issue with one of the turbos which causes sluggish performance at low RPM and then a sudden burst of power at around 2500 RPM - quite dangerous. Local garage (excellent guy) is replacing the smaller turbo (£650 + VAT) and it's about 10 hours labour (£500 + VAT) so quite a hit and not a particularly common fault on twin turbo cars. Advised not to get a second hand turbo from a breakers because it still takes 10 hours to fit and there's no comeback if it turns out to be a duffer.

Only other problem was left and right rear air suspension failed but that was under BMW Approved Used Warranty (phew).

I just hope this isn't the start of a string of failures as mileage is quite high. No reason why it should be but "good money after bad" may come in to play if it goes wrong.

Great car for towing and after an hour with the local car valet chaps it still looks great so sticking with this one for a while.

Nice to see someone to resurrect my thread from 2013 and i'm glad you're enjoy your E70.

We still have ours, now with 118,000 miles on the clock and still going well, see the pic attached after I'd spent a day getting the bucket and sponge out after one of trips to the South of France. Perfect for that sort of road trip.

Had a few issues over the last 5 1/2 years with the rear bags needing to be replaced, an engine sensor which made itself known by cutting out whilst driving (that wasn't pleseant, especially for an auto!), the sunroof drain holes getting clogged and then last year, had the fan pulley's replaced as they were squeeling rather loudly.

However as it's now approaching 12 year old, I'm now starting thinking of replacing it with an F15, athough the prices for those need to drop a little bit more first .
