Very stiff rear gear changes
Discussion
I've got a bit of a problem on my roadie at the moment. Gear changes on the rear are becoming increasingly stiffer on each ride.
I've cleaned the chain down using WD40, re-oiled and oiled again using a good oil and the problem disappeared, but the problem comes back after a couple of rides. I've also checked the cabling but it's sily smooth, and the rear mech feels very smooth too.
It's all Ultegra gear and relatively new....(2010). Do I need a new chain or cassette?
It's really frustrating when you can't accurately change gears on a climb and after 80km, it's the last thing you need on the final climb!!
Any ideas what could be wrong?

i would remove derailleur, clean and soak in white spirit. remove chain and soak in white spirit. replace gear cable including housing (even though you say it is smooth). reassemble and spray with copious amount of gt85, wipe off excess and then put some dry lube on chain and oil various moving parts of the derailleur.
at least that's what i would do. no doubt someone will be along to mock / criticise my approach!

Cheers all for the tips. I'll give it a shot in the next couple of days when I can get hold of some new cable.
The bike has probably done about 8k since I bought it. (I do about 650km per month or so), plus races and all sorts and it's never really had a full service. I usually just make sure all the gear mechanisms are clean and oiled properly but that's about it.
It might just be worth taking it in for that alone....
Other than that, it's always been kept indoors when not in use, cleaned after every ride and is in impeccable condition apart from this damned gear problem!
Another problem is a bit of a "rumble" at high speed from my front wheel. I've got Dura Ace C24's and I'm wondering if it might be the bearings. I've gone over some real rough tarmac this summer and I get the feeling I might be hammering the bearings pretty hard. Are they easy enough to change?
