Lens Advice, what to add to the kit lens?

I'm really happy with my Nikon d3100 and have been using it more and more since I bought it early last year. The 18-55mm kit lens has been great so far, however I think it's time to add a couple of extra lenses. My initial thoughts are to add a Nikon 35mm f1.8 prime lens for family shots and low light stuff and an extra telephoto, either the Nikon 55-200 VR or the 55-300 VR. The only thing I've read so far is that I might be better off with a 70-300mm VR as the autofocus is much quicker.

Any thoughts on the above as sensible additions to cover most bases or do I need to look at any alternatives?

I'd agree with all that. One other to consider, though it may be too pricey, is a faster higher quality replacement for the kit lens - in this case the fearsome Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 'Widowmaker'.


(Actually it's not called the Widowmaker, I just added that to look cool)

Or if you want to explore new pastures, possibly literally, a macro...?

I agree with everything you said.

Buy the 35mm today, buy the 70-300 VR tomorrow. If you buy one of the 55-200/300 telephotos, you'll always wish you went with the 70-300.

But buy the 35mm today.

Do you actually need a telephoto? I know it's the default choice but a lot of people get very little use out of it.
