hey guys, another problem with the 350i has appeared. the gear lever and knob started rattling a week ago and it's getting worse and worse. The way to avoid it seems to be gripping the knob and holding it pulling it slightly upwards while driving, real annoying.

Now i've tried to get a look into the shift mechanism but i can't get the centre interior panel off how do i do that? The gaiter is stapled to that.

Sounds like the remote shifter bushes, easy to change from underneath

What a coincidence, I was just about to post a thread about the same problem, my shifter has been vibrating for a while and then a took a turn for the worse whilst at Wedge Fest, and all the way home, I had to drive holding upwards pressure on the gear knob.
I will also be taking a look.
The centre console is easy enough to remove, but having said that mine is an old series one, held in place with a couple of nuts and screws.
Let me know how you get on and what you discover
Cheers
Roger

you too! I ordered poly bushings and when the weather is good i'm going to see if i can drop that remote shifter mechanism off my car from underneath. I've got a series 2 so the mid console seems to be glued to the body or something (cant find any bolts or screws).

It's been a while since I've had the centre console off, but from memory, there are the two nuts which secure into two upright bolts located within the radio/heater control box, but you might have the newer all in one console which sweeps up into the dash ?.
The sell tapping screws on mine are beneath the sunken carpet area in the rear section of the console.

Did it from the underside entirely and no rattling! smile It's easy to do, just keep in mind you have to not tighten the foru bolts up before they are all replaced or you will (like me) spend hours on trying to get the last one in before realising that.

Also if you get this a quick fix while you order the bushes is to tie-wrap the remote bracket up to the chassis.

I did the same job last night. Took me 1.5 hour to replace the 4 rubbers. The old ones were completely gone. Nothing left.

I need to do the exact same job on mine.
Does anyone have a link handy to the bushes? Especially the polyurethane ones?

May as well go for solid bushes (alloy, brass, Acetal) - it's not as though you need the anti-vibration effect in a Wedge biggrin

Some people have used 15mm copper tube to good effect - and that will never rot, either.

Those blue poly bushes above remind me of a post way back where someone stated that after a short while they disintegrated and were not up to the job.

Anyone actually used these and checked condition further down the road.

As Wedgie has posted, can one not use a solid bush?
