These "please diagnose my problem" posts are always a long shot, but I wondered whether anyone could can make a suggestion about a very odd drivetrain vibration that I get intermittently on our family wagon, a 2010 (part-time) 4WD Hyundai Santa Fè.

The problem has presented itself 3 times over the last 150 miles or so and takes the form of a very heavy vibration linked to road speed originating, I think, from the passenger side rear. On the first occasion it occurred as I set off having stopped for fuel and was getting back on the motorway. Initially I though that a door or boot lid was open as it was very similar in frequency to when someone opens a rear window at speed. I stopped, checked all doors, set off again and the problem had gone. Since then it has occurred on two further occasions, each time starting whilst already driving along at a steady speed. Bringing the vehicle to a halt and restarting has casued the issue to go away immediately.

The vibration feels like a very out of balance wheel or a section of very badly corrogated road surface (it isn't). It is linked to road speed but occurs independently of whether the car is in or out of gear and remains during braking and acceleration and I am unable to provoke it making it difficult for me to ask a dealership to assist.

I have removed the wheel, had a good look underneath the car and can't find any play, wear or signs of anything amiss. However, at the moment I'm in Rome and will have to make the return journey to UK in mid-August - something I'd like to do without any unforseen problems!

Any suggestions of what else I can do to identify this problem would be most appreciated.

From what you describe, I would be looking in the area of NSR wheel bearings/hub/driveshaft/diff.

Sorry that is fairly general, but these things are difficult to describe & equally difficult to diagnose from a distance.

Thanks for the reply, I have jacked that corner up and had a look but couldn't find anything unusual. Very odd.

Another thought - could this be caused by a CV joint which sticks or binds occasionally?

Are you sure you haven't got a failed damper? (road spring damper, not transmission damper!)

Max, I hadn't considered that but it's a good shout. I'll have a look, thanks.

Could possibly be a tyre cord/casing failure causing the tyre to go out of shape above a certain speed

Funnily enough I had just such a tyre failure on the same corner on my way down to Rome and am currently running on the (new) spare.

However, this gave a constant, rather than intermittent, issue, therefore I don't think it is the case now.

Check for any excessive movement in the propshafts.

If they don't get greased the spider joints start to knock and vibrate

I've replaced a couple of rear wheel bearings on these, they come as a complete hub assembly...

Should be still in warranty!

Thanks folks, it's going in to a Rome Hyundai dealership on Wednesday for them to have a look. I just hope they don't send it back saying they can't find a problem...
