OPC restoration competition

According to my OPC there is a restoration project competition going on. Tonbridge is restoring a 1979 911 2.7 sportmatic

Once it is complete it will be put on show in their showroom until they get a good offer on it or for two years (I am told)
I am receiving the odd email keeping me upto date with it.

Does anyone know which other OPCs are also doing a restoration. Apparently there are 8 of them doing it

Cardiff are restoring a 993 Carrera. It has already been sold for 39k.

OPC Cardiff are currently restoring a 993. The car is pre-sold to a customer but they plan to do more once it's finished:

Think it must be earlier if it's a 2.7 or a 3.0 SC?

I would expect there's quite a difference between restoring a 1970's car and a mid-90's one.


However, it's great to see that the OPC network (or part of it - is this one dealer group, or a PCGB incentive?) is embracing the history of the marque whilst (hopefully) also showing that they're capable of looking after them. I've never heard of any other manufacturers doing this as a competition


I wonder if they're going to get the Porsche Club GB's beards to judge them

Looks like they have left the tyres on whilst painting the wheels.....what on earth is that all about ?! Given how much it costs to get wheels refurbed that seems very,very odd........

I thought the exact same thing. Seems ridiculous and if they are posting photos of that you wonder what other short cuts might be taken.

Oh dear. What a lazy thing to do. Saves a few minutes and prevents a proper refurb. Sad, if that's the general attitude to the project.

Perhaps because it is already sold there is a fixed OPC margin to be made on the exercise. If it a true `restoration` £39K seems quite cheap, no wonder they didn't take the tyres off!

Yup. Massive red flag. They are either taking short cuts or just don't know what they're doing. Clearly neither are good.

Cardiff are also skimming the the discs in situ. See image 8 of 20.

Now then, theres nothing wrong with either of these techniques and both have their place, but it would appear that the budget for this 'restoration' has been mis-allocated towards the photographer....

Someone told me all OPCs had to buy a classic 911 to restore this year. Might be wrong, of course. It helped prices at auction.

If the wheels only require a cosmetic refurbishment to the face I can why you'd leave the tyres on (but break the beads) - there's no risk of damage when re-mounting the tyres as all you have to do is re-inflate them.

One of the Birmingham based Porsche centres (Sutton Coldfield?) are doing a 964.

My Boxster was in OPC Cardiff on Saturday for some work & I was fortunate enough to be invited to have a look at the restoration project in the workshop. I can categorically say that the work they are completing on the car is to the highest standard, the car had just returned from a full repaint (by Motorvation - the OPC paintshop) & it's a fantastic job.

I had a good look around the car while it was on ramps & there is a huge amount of effort going into making it right. The new owner will be getting a well sorted car.

They didn't have to buy one, but PCGB put the competition in place for anyone that wanted to participate.

Silverstone have 3 ! The shell of a freshly painted 84 Carrera Cabrio in Grand Prix White and an 83 3.3 Turbo in Silver were both on display at Silverstone Classic, plus they have just bought an 86 Carrera Coupe in Guards Red !
