Superchargers - again

The "bottom end" thread was mentioning superchargers, and I just finished reading a write-up in Practical Performance Cars on a supercharged 3.5 (see here) that was producing around 300+bhp, so thought I was bring up this old discussion again.
Also, found it interesting to note that TVR were using the Rotrex unit on the S6. To me, this type of charger, similar to the Vortech/Paxton/Powerdyne units would provide a much simpler alternative to the twin-turbo approach. It would have a mimimum impact on the intake plumbing and no impact on the exhuast routing - this alone solves a key point. It would also avoid some of the issues raised by RPI when using the Eaton/Lysholm type blower. With some improvements to the engine management side, you could leave the compression ratio alone and keep the boost to a reasonable level. You'd still have to up the injectors & pump, but not much else would have to change. As the power increase is delivered in relation to engine speed, the wear & tear on drivetrain would be less (though still a concern) than other solutions (e.g. Turbo, NOS).

Heat would be a problem, so you'd be looking at ceramic headers and a charge-cooler (or three) to squash in there somewhere!

There are several ways to fit a blower under there. None of them are particularly easy, but its definitely possible. Centrefugal blowers are actually among the easiest to package because they are relatively short. Compression ratio isn't a problem if you keep the boost down, likewise mechanical strength is primarily an issue when you want to raise the rev limit; running slightly higher bmep doesn't increase the mechanical loads significantly.
