Major Op for my Mum...Nervous

Well the day has finally arrived when they will carry out the first of two operations to remove cancer from my Mum. Its very scary. I was fine until just now, but its all very real. Months of tests, two course of chemo, more tests, before the final okay. Tomorrow she will undergo an 8hr plus operation on her oesophagus. The recovery will be long, and its not without risk. The alternative was prolonged chemo and radio.
I'm sure she's in good hands, the consultants are highly skilled and to my mind its better to cut it out if you can rather than rely on other methods. Just cant imagine where her head is at right now, lying in hospital bed waiting for it to happen, knowing she will wake up to never be the same, bruised and battered and in intensive care.
Any thoughts or advice welcome. Need to support my Dad, he's not used to being on his own.

Good luck. It definitely is a major one. My dad has the same illness but they don't think he'd survive such an op. I won't go into the details about how gruesome the op is if you have decided to avoid googling it! (I reckon I could do it as I have a Dremel, a scalpel and a steady hand - shame I'd pass out at the first incision.

When my Dad had surgery for bowel cancer, my Mum didn't want to be alone on the day of the op and wanted to be kept occupied too. So I took her out locally on the day and she stayed at mine for the 3 weeks he was in hospital (ICU for a bit also and some complications). Same for the second op which was about 5 months later.
Kept her busy with organising family visiting rota, phone calls and bits Dad needed in hospital over that time. I organised a mix of work from home and office to accommodate taking her to/from hospital and not leaving her by herself.
Being there for them and supporting however you can got my parents through. I found we (brother and I) had to be their strength when they wobbled. Take it a day at a time and hope it all goes well.
