hedgehopper thanks for that much appreciated. pigpen, the refurb was due to 'shuttle' wear I believe. Not sure what internal part of the steering that was/does but it allowed oil to pass through the offside bearing and into the gaiter. A new 'shuttle' was manufactured and the whole rack then refurbished.
OK thanks. Last year when travelling to Classic LeMans my steering really stiffened up badly, same travelling home and still trying to pinpoint a cause before doing another long run. Its obviously heat soak as the day after arrival, both ends, all back to normal. UJs have been done but no discernable difference. Sorry for the hijack!

Don't forget the pump is part of the system too - could be that ?Its possible I guess. Was only talking about it tonight and it felt like you were actually fighting the power steering when it was tight. So thought that if the rack / fluid reached a certain temperature pressurised oil was perhaps passing into a chamber which should be venting, or wasn't venting when it should be. Or if the pump was no longer pumping then you would be trying to move the rack against hydraulic fluid which wasn't moving. Does anyone have a sectioned drawing of the rack and circuit schematic? If I do another long trip then I really have no option at present but to get it all serviced. Fortunately its ok at present!
