I seem to recall Mr Marston had one too Arnie?

I pretty sure he won't be getting another Caterham any time soon, perhaps it's worth pinging him to see if he has still got it?

I thought the base casting for the R500 head is the same VHPD head as used on the SLR/R400, albeit with some fettling and bigger valves.

It is. From memory, Vulcan is the preferred one. Tom B in Cambridge had a stock; I acquired one from him when Minister rebuilt my R500. Arnie, worth a search on BC for 'head' cos he advertised them on there several years ago...

There are three castings

MS casting - original Motorsport / VHPD head, modified for R500, virtually stock for SLR
MS2 casting - later casting with rubbed cores to allow more extremes porting , modified for R500, virtually stock for R400
Vulcan casting - latest casting , lightly modified for R500, out of the box for R400

None of these had bigger valves than the regular 31.5mm/27.5mm ones fitted originally,

Thanks chaps. How does one determine the difference?

Is a Vulcan head related to an engine builder of the same name that used to (and may still) be in the Ealing area?

Vulcan refers to the foundry where it was cast.

Both early and late VHPD (MS & MS2) heads have a casting number of LDF10290 on the inlet flange between cylinders one and two, the early MS heads have the letters MS scribed backwards on the exhaust side, the later MS2 castings have the logo MS2 in relief on the exhaust side the correct way round. The Vulcan casting has the casting number KCH10018 on the exhaust side of the head.

I had one and sold it to Jochaim who was building up a supply of spares for the german race series .

Might be worth a try , they have probably moved on to Duratec .

PS not sure what the current going rate is for these but i sold the bare MS2 for over £1000 .
