Installing the Ceramic gear stick

Hi all,
A bit of help please. Since the installation of the 4.3 in the Tamora the gear gear stick has become much hotter so I'm changing out for the above. The stick came with no instructions so I went about installing the stick I managed to get the old alloy stick removed with a pair of mole grips. then realised from passed experience way back that; iirc I needed to slacken off the grub screw below the stick damper... is it metric or imperial? the only allen key I had at the time was a 4mm which seemed a little slack and the grub screw was very, very tight and didn't want to force the issue.
As mentioned I did get the stick off & installed the new ceramic stick which went on as it should down the thread and stopped about 2mm above the seating washer. the gear stick spins around freely both ways but will not reverse thread to remove it. Its definately not threaded it went on smoothly and theres no swarf debris anyware. Its not affecting the gear change including reverse other than spinning round both way easily.
Any advise would be great as me thinks Ive dropped an elephant size testicle
