They make your ears tingle (the Buc not quite as much), we were at the cold war jets day earlier this year a great day out of which the F6 was my personal highlight (2 year old preferred the Nimrod) and would love to the QRF date but tickets where sold out PDQ.

Might appear a bit of a daft question but here goes...

Can Lightning brakes hold her static whist both engine and reheat are applied??

They fast taxi so far from static, the brakes would probably cook if you held it on reheat for long.

I doubt very much a Lightning would hold on the brakes at 100% RPM, let alone in 'burner.

Lighting holds a special place for me.

Many years ago whilst at the Biggin Hill air show, a Lighting did several low passes which was pretty spectacular to a 10 year old.

Little did we or another 50 or so spectators know but on her final pass almost over our heads towards the end of the runway, she did a tail stand and climbed up into the clouds.

I still have that view of the main and burner and the ear drum breaking sound embedded deep in the memory bank all these years later.

Yes, Canberra used Coffman cartridges. I have a few spent ones around the house somewhere - they polish up nicely (I was in 100 Sqn space cadets).

Early Canberras such as the B2 and PR3 used a single breech cartridge, later types such as the B(I)6 and B(I)8 used a triple breech cartridge system.

The PR9, on the other hand, used an AVPIN starter.

Interestingly the Rhodesian Air Force developed a compressed air starer for its Canberras.

G G15 G, that's really interesting wasn't aware that Rhodesia operated the Canberra, do you have a link to any more details on the starter mechanism? (F-i-L is Rhodesian (ex-P.A.T.U)).

I think most of the free world has at some point flown Canberra’s. Think of the 65 years or so they have been in service most tin pot countries that have wanted to cheaply drop a shed load of iron bombs onto someone with a degree of precision have probably used an EEC.
