Hello,
Can anyone tell me where I can get any pictures of what the original finish was underneath on a 1989 Range Rover Classic. I am currently resoring my car and I want it as close to original as I can get.

I've spent a week now trying to find any reference or pictures with obsolutely no success. Everyone seems to just paint the underneath of the body in what ever colour the car is, which is fine if that's how they came out of the factory?

Anyway, I hope that all makes sense and any help on this will be greatly appreciated, thankyou,

Anthony

Depends if it was an Autobiography or not... biggrin

The chassis would have been a plain black finish but the underside of the bodyshell would have been whatever colour the rest of the bodyshell was. IIRC - In those days, the bodyshell was just dipped in a paint bath rather than being sprayed.

Anything custom would have been a 'Body in White' (or was it black in those days??) and then sprayed.

Mines a vogue se. I've stripped alot of the waxoil off now and it's leaving the seam sealer and a hard underseal that is a military green colour?

Thanks.

The bare chassis was usually a satin black colour.., 99% thinners and 1% paint, that way you will duplicate the rust that will emerge 1 month later.
On a serious note though, you can buy "Smoothrite" in a nice satin black, sprayed on the chassis it looks like OE .

Whilst I understand the sentiment of a concurs "as original" restoration I would be adding some underseal and waxoyl substances to the shell during the build process if I ever planned to use it in anything but perfect weather.

The bottom of the CSK was covered in underseal and body coloured paint, as is my brothers 93 and my Dads 94 Soft Dash. My 81 is covered in mud, haven't got round to stripping it yet.
