In the last two months I've lost quite a lot of weight, or more accurately fat because I've been doing bits of working out too. But mostly off my legs and arse, some from belly but I think I've hit a level where I'm not going to lose any more just from my new diet. I'm not worried about going back to eating loads because I seem to be able to focus a lot easier now certain factors of stress in my life have had a line drawn under them. Tbh it's just more of a diet change than thinking 'I'm on a diet' as a temporary measure.
I've pretty much lost what I wanted and carry it well being tall but just want to lose the final bit around my middle, I used to be quite ripped but not any more!!!
What is the most effective, not easiest but most effective way of cutting those final bits that a bit of casual exercise and eating less wont touch?
For a start I'm planning on re joining the gym and doing more cardio. Will crunches etc help or is that just building more abs muscle under the belly fat?
Also will doing more cardio based exercise and upping my protein intake help?
Not really sure where to start, would appreciate some advice

You can't target a specific area of fat to lose, so you just need to keep working on getting your overall bodyfat percentage down. As you say, crunches just work the muscles under the fat - to see the results you need to reduce/lose the fat covering.
So upping exercise such as running and cycling should help? To look at me I don't look fat tbh but it's that when you sit down and it all flops hahaYou are what you eat. The fat around your belly is toxins from a bad diet that have collected and stored there. Try getting your food from more natural sources.
Thinks nuts, seeds and vegetables for your protein. Easily as much in those as what there is in meat, which when cooked and sometimes overcooked is not worth eating. Eat plenty of blueberries, blackberries etc to clean out your system. Your body will it, trust me.

Indeed, it's not a pleasant sight and the reason why I decided to do something about it about 18 months ago.Almost identical situation here! Soooooo frustrating but I know it's all diet since I go to the gym several times a week, cycle and run...I'm not convinced I'll ever recover from being a fat child
I did try a dramatic weight loss but I thought I looked weirdly thin elsewhere (gut still there) so I put it back on again.
A tip I was given, is to work your back muscles more - it'll improve your posture and the belly fat isn't quite so obvious

The phrase 'abs are made in the kitchen' was coined for a reason.
Do all the crunches and running you like but if you're diet isn't spot on you will struggle, you might get a flatter tummy but it will take forever.
Cut out all processed sugar and foods if you can ie all white bread, white pasta and potatoes. Swap for wholemeal or spelt varieties and use sweet potatoes. Avoid simple carbs and limit your complex carb intake as much as possible. If you're not naturally slim it's damn hard work to look like the mega fit people on twitter etc but it can be done. Just don't think lifting weights or running will do it alone.
If you eat junk food or drink fizzy drinks then cut them out, drink plenty of water. Sleep 8hrs a night at least 5 times a week, avoid stress as it raises your cortisol levels and that can make you store fat as well.
Basically sweat your b
ks off and eat mega clean, once you get there it will be easier to maintain and you can re-introduce other foods sticking to the 80/20 rule.
