mclaren p13 v 911

sorry to mention a mclaren subject however, the p13 on the horizon is setting its target on the 911.
I have to say, i think it could be quite exciting
thoughts?

How big are the rear seats?

911 is THE usable branded sports car (ok not sports any more lol, GT car is more like it) which in real terms is cheap to run and you can use every day.

I am not a 911 fan myself so to that respect I like any other car which wants to go head to head with one.

But it is the 911's USP.

It's the whole raison d'etre of the 911 design, with the engine so far back. The 2+2 configuration in a relatively compact and practical design, is what makes the 911 unique and why I've been able to justify my purchases over so many years.

McLaren p13 (stupid name) brings nothing new to the table - no shortage of 2-seater sports cars to choose from.

Yes Mac have a problem on their hands, the new car is supposed to compete with a Turbo, yet the new Turbo S is supposedly quicker round the Ring than a MP4..

So will they make the new model quicker than the more expensive one??

we just need a nice 300BHP/ton 2 seater sports car.

people say many to choose from, when in fact there are not many at all to choose from, only Super cars over £100k :-(

fair point but i far prefer the looks of the 991 and yes the back seats/ extra space is a bonus

the Alfa could have ben nice, but now is underpowered and those lights are not forgiving, as could a mini R8 with the 2.5l 5 pot unit.

the new Lotus ELan was the best of the new cars from them until they gave up selling cars lol ie. about 20 car sales in Europe in the 1st 1/4.

i think that there are numerous cars that are good for enthusiasts but also stand up to the big boys aka ferrari etc. mp12 successfully made a stab. i don't think the readers here would quickly jump to other brands - me included because we want the best driving experience with solid build etc. if they made the p13 more aggressive looking coupled with a great exhaust (the drive goes without saying), i reckon they will sell well, albeit not by the quantum of 911 but would be a credible alternative if you dont absolutely need the rear seats. a bit of british stealthyness would be quite attractive.

So Mclaren are yet another maker to openly state that they will build something to the target the 911 and take some of its sales. Aston Martin said the same when they brought out the Vantage, Lotus when they brought out the Evora and recently Jaguar with the F type. Although in the latter case they don't seem to be sure whether it's the 911 or boxster that they have their eye on. I can't help thinking that all these guys would be better off focusing on their own design and marketing rather than trying to de-throne the 911.

not so much a de throne, just possibly something on the horizon that might be worth considering

Make the p13 a three seater with a usable front boot and roof fixing points and voila.

I would imagine the car would be priced against the Carrera rather than the turbo.

The McLaren will be superb, but I think people may like the metal bodied 50 year old more purely for the heritage and aspirations they have had throughout life. So there will the same heat in the arguments that are out there comparing the MP4 12C with a 458. Polarising stuff!

They have a global order book of several hundred cars (over 700) and have sold 70 up to May across Europe (versus 80 in the whole of last year). New car sales generally across most areas is at a 20 year low in Europe.

..The P13 Macca will go head to head with the next Gen of Porsche, code named 960, it was recently, put back a year to 2014, but the concept work has been done, I have no further details, but rumour has it with a quad turbo flat 8 and 600bhp.
