any painters out there that can help me with this slight issue.
I have been asked by a mate to paint on some old school style flames on the bonnet of his VW t4 van, on the whole the job has gone ok, but i noticed having sprayed the bonnett that even after a couple of days in the sun curing that when i tape up the flames they leave a residue mark (for want of a better explanation) against the paint. As i then painted the flames in, removed the masking and then did flames over flames so to speak, the same thing happened. As it turns out the marks polished out, but wanting to learn where i am going wrong i though i would ask the wise collective for opinion !

Its the solvent in the glue on the back edge of the tape causing the problem,

we noticed it when we tape up edges and gaps for machine polishing and happens with a lot of repair work smart repair and bodyshop work.

Never noticed it with original paint thou , we found that the lacquer we use needs at least 2-3 days after baking before it does not mark with 3M masking tape, being blue and light beige type tape.

That said its down to how long the tapes left on if it got wet or if its subjected to long periods at high temps

You could try this tape from 3M its better for fine lining , has less tack and does not leech with water base paints.

thanks for the info. . .i re-ordered masking tape which arrived today and co-incidentally it happens to be 3M, although not blue. . .the last lot i got was from Brown Brothers, so i would have hoped it would be fit for purpose, but no real harm done. I will follow your pro advice though and go for the blue stuff. My next project is to 'Bar Code' my Lupo roof so knowing the paint creep issue is not a problem will proove useful. . .thanks again

we get our stuff from brown brothers , if you read my post again its the blue and beige stuff that will mark (leaving print of tape glue into the surface of lacquer), its not the tape at fault its the soft NONE cured paint thats the problem, but 3M have recognised that paint is now softer and easier to mark so they brought out a new tape with less solvents to solve the issues.

As i said none of the tapes mark original fully cured paint.

we find it is better for masking and removes much easier , and like its advertising says does not have any issues when wet sanding and removes after being wet and then dried out even when left on panel for days.

Brown brother do sell it , we are still waiting for back order on one of the sizes thou .

understood Kelly, appreciate your double reply. . .i had hoped that 2 days out in the sun and temps we have had recently would have been enough, but i guess it wasnt ! i did flat it back before applying the tape so i guess next time flat it back and give it longer for the 'fresh' surface to go off. Whilst i have your expertise, i used a SATA minijet for the job (first time i have used it) which i found to be pretty good, although i noticed it seemed to spray more evenly at the top half of the fan width than the bottom. . .being a bit nerdy on such things i have cleaned and cleaned and cleaned it, but it still seems to be a little uneven. . .my devilbiss at the same PSI and bigger fluid tip (1.8) gives me no such trouble, but any wise words to offer on this issue ? the SATA was an ebay purchase and in as new condition if that helps with a disgnosis. fluid tip is 1.2.

Your gun problem could be a damaged/faulty air cap.
As there is no correct 'this way up' have you tested it with the cap turned through 180 degs.

I bought a brand new boxed spray gun (GTI Pro) from ebay, it was as back up spare gun.

decided to use the gun some year later and basically we had a really poor spray pattern , when we looked closer is had a very lightly damaged air cap and now makes sense why it was cheaper then it should be.

It very hard to see the damage but caused a big issue.

Hi Kelly mine was form Ebay too. . . it came with a spare aircap, which i have tried over the weekend, and it doesnt seem any better frown so either two bad aircaps, or its something else. . .be suprising to have two bad aircaps, but its worth ruling out of course. otherwise the gun is good, the fluid control is very good, and just what i needed for my ghost flames smile

Wow Kelly, just looked at your website

With detailing, how do you get the cars so shiny? Is it a special sponge or something that you use to wash it?
